So lets begin by going back to 500 bc…

CELTS 500-100 BCThey were responsible for the Iron Age, which began around 650bc. The Celts were warriors and just as likely to fight amongst themselves as to fight other people! It was a time when hill forts were built in Britain, but it is known whether the Britons built them to defend themselves, or if the Celts built them when they arrived. The Celts introduced a new language and a new religion.

Romans 1st-5th CThey originated in Italy and ruled the Roman Empire, Which stretched across Europe. Romans imported different foods and materials and introduced new laws, inventions and ideas such as central heating, straight roads, plumbing, cabbages, peas, firemen, police, cement and bricks, the calendar, Latin language and education plus many many more.

Anglo Saxons 5th CThey traversed the North Sea in a series of attacks and eventually introduced the Old English Language, changes to religion, law, settlements and new kingdoms.

Vikings 8th CMany travelled across the sea in long ships from Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) looking for new places to farm and trade their furs, weapons and honey. They introduced the runes (Viking letters carved in stone). They loved telling and listening to stories and poems, and passed many of these on. They also made up names and nicknames for everything and everyone.

Normans 11th CThe conquest began after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 led by William the conqueror from France. Normans introduced the French language, as well as a new design for castles, bows and arrows, a king and new laws. Huguenots- travelled from france during 17thC (1670 to London), frightened of being persecuted in France because they were not Catholic (they were protestant). They took refuge and so were England's first ‘refugees’. Many were skilled workers who crafted silver, silk and founded weaving businesses- a quarter of Londoners nowadays have Huguenot ancestors.
