Three Ideas that will Influence the Future Digital Learning Experience
A little while ago, I wrote down a long list of
ideas, concepts and trends that would
influence the future digital learning
experience.
It was a long list, and I'll spare the details.
In time, I hope to write about them all.
But for now I'll offer a short discussion on
three very interesting (and even reasonable)
ideas that will influence learning in the future.

explain how science, technology, engineering and
math are being used all around us.

Not every “thing” has to be an electronic device.
It just needs to be connected.

Ever notice that the Mona Lisa has no clearly visible eyebrows or eyelashes?
Will learning about home refrigeration systems
and art history help the psychology student
understand cognitive development?
Maybe not.
But who knows what types of insightful
connections people will make when they are able
to
“see behind the curtain” of everyday life.
The Internet of Things is going to create fluid and rapid learning experiences that will play a critical role in our academic and professional pursuits.

Micro-learning is a way of teaching
and delivering content to learners in
small, very specific bursts.
Just so we’re clear….

Outside the classroom,
learning situations are unpredictable.
But we all know that
learning happens everywhere.
Devices and networks have opened up new
possibilities to access information.
Micro-learning is a natural outcome of the
mobile, digitally connected world.
It will be a constant feature of any student
and professional journey.

Micro-learning together with the Internet of Things harnesses the potential of every environment to be a space and place where people learn. It also creates a natural bridge between academic lessons and real-world context.

Passive learning is in decline.
Interactive content is the new standard.
From quizzes to simulators to interactive
objects, learners gain a deeper understanding

Interactive content should encourage
exploration.
It should force the learner to react to unexpected
events that help strengthen comprehension.
After all, our professional experience is anything
but predictable.
Lightweight interactive experiences across devices
and channels will be a core feature of digital
learning.
I won’t claim that everything will be
connected, micro-sized and interactive
in the next few years.
But these three ideas will have a long-term impact
on how learning experiences will be built on the
new digital frontier.
