“I come from the Batman era, adding items to my utility belt,

while students today are the Borg from Star Trek, assimilating technology into their lives.”

Lesson 1: “I’m Batman, not Borg.”

Questions to ponder…

How are students today different? (or the same?)

Why does this matter?

Are you Batman? Borg? Digital immigrant or native?

Create your own learning metaphor.

“It is about creating an environment whereevery child can thrive.”

For that to happen we need differentiated instruction,

we need a flexible curriculum,

and we need teachers that are the same

life-long learners we hope our students become.

Lesson 2: “I’m a square peg in a round hole.”

Questions to ponder…

How don’t you ‘fit in’ and how does this challenge you?

How have you differentiated learning for a square peg?

What can you do to help a square peg in your class/school?

What needs to change?

Questions to ponder…

How don’t you ‘fit in’ and how does this challenge you?

How have you differentiated learning for a square peg?

What can you do to help a square peg in your class/school?

What needs to change? How do we make this happen?

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm….

“I think that I am guilty of

seeing the value of

using technology in guiding learning,

but not effectively guiding

learning in my technology use.”

What can we do to

help students leave our schools

feeling like they are

empowered learners?

As I was talking my student

interrupted and said,

“I just had a flash of insight,

I’m a mop not a sponge!”

Lesson 3: Reflection, metacognition, and metaphors

are powerful ways to learn.

When do you make the time to meaningfully reflect?

When do you/your staff/your class think about thinking?

When do you/your staff/your class talk about learning?

How do you use metaphors to teach and learn?
