Develop more experiential, problem-based, service-based and cultural-based learning opportunities

Put learning and students first

Run more efficiently - work together as a SYSTEM to achieve cost savings

Pay ourselves first not outsiders

Make use of our excess capacity

PRIMARY CONCEPTS

Page 6: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

THE 24 HOUR CAMPUSTHE PROBLEM: EXCESS CAPACITY

Page 7: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

7:30am-7:30 pmWe are shut 12

hours

we operate,Generally speaking

Page 8: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

If we were in real estate If we were in the hotel industry

Page 9: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

If we were in real estate If we were in the hotel industry

We’d be out of business!

Page 10: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

We are a 24 hour society and the jobs many of our students

are training for are:

Fire and Safety

Food Service

Health Care

Law Enforcement

Hospitality

Page 11: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

“I can’t get my classes,

they aren’t offered

when I need them or

they closed early.”

STUDENTS ALWAYS COMPLAIN

“I ’d love to go back to

school but I can’t quit

my job. Classes aren’t

offered when I need

them.”

STUDENTS ALWAYS COMPLAIN

O’AHU TRAFFIC

We start carmageddonWE ARE THE PROBLEM!

Page 16: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

In IT when the network slows down you either upgrade your network

(faster cables or routers)

OR YOU ADJUST THE TRAFFIC PATTERN

Page 17: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

LESS TRAFFIC

If we spread out the load of our class offerings we can reduce the

traffic problem on O’ahu

Page 18: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

BIOLOGICALLY WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT

THE PROBLEM

Page 19: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

Based on human body clock

research we know certain

fields or endeavors are best

taught or done at certain

times of day...

PHYSIOLOGICALLY WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT

THE PROBLEM

Page 20: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

We tried to expand our capacity

through DE

DE VS. IN-PERSON

DE works best...

for theory based courses

for highly motivated students

for technically inclined students

Moving to a 24-Hour Based Campus

!!Pilot runnin

!!Run classes

out of ONE building

(lower energy cost) su

building on campus

Page 22: Thinking Outside the Box: The 24 Hour College and the Modern Day Campus Ahupuaʻa

Offer classes on MW and TR.

Monday and Tuesday offer a

Gen Ed

course EVERYONE needs to take

English, Math or History

!!WR offer a lab c

ourse that you must

show up to take in person b

ecause

you can’t teach it online like

a CTE

lab class, a science lab or a

rt lab

THE RESULT

We will have expanded our capacity to enroll more students !Those who fight Ewa traffic will have an easier commute (20-40 minutes versus 75-90 minutes)

TRANSLATION Unite to move forward !EXPLANATION By working together we make progress. This saying would be especially applicable to the Hawaiians on their canoes where each paddler would have to pull the paddles together on command in order to make the canoe move forward quickly.

TRANSLATION Paddle together, bail, paddle; paddle, bail; paddle towards the land !EXPLANATION If everybody works together the work will be done quickly. On inter-island trips, the two most important tools besides the sail were the paddles and the bailer. In heavy seas, the water would wash over the boat and so one or more natives would be constant bailing. Others would be paddling together on command to reach their destination in the shortest time.
