Primary Research• Definition

– Research you do yourself– Where the audience and the researcher are in direct contact

• Advantages– You can create your own research to get the information you need for your

work– You could ask extra questions during and interview

• Disadvantages– It can take a long time to set-up your research. You then have to gather your results and

then present them– Finding the right people to ask can sometimes be a challenge

• Example– Questionnaires/Surveys– Interviews

Secondary Research• Definition

– Studying previously undertaken research– Using existing research in your own work

• Advantages– The research has already been done for you. You just need to look at it and then use it in

your project.– There can be a wide range of resources available

• Disadvantages– The research may not be quite what you were looking for– The research might not always be easy to find– You have to rely on how well others have researched

• Example– Internet research– Library research– Archive research

Quantitative Research• Definition

– Expressed or expressible as a quantity– Research that you can quantify/measure and put into percentages, fractions and

numbers• Advantages

– Easy to read information.• Disadvantages

– Limited information that you get. • Example• Sales• Box Office figures• Website hits• TV ratings

Qualitative Research• Definition

– Research that goes more in depth- finding out opinions/beliefs/reasoning– Presented as full text or discussions– Makes the person have to reflect and expand on their answer

• Advantages• Worded questions that they are asked easily • Disadvantages• Multiple answers to simple question.

• Example• Reviews• Responses• Discussions• Forums

Audience Research• Definition• Finding out about who consumes a product.• Advantages• Know who your product interests most and to find out if your product is

going to be a hit or not.• Disadvantages• If your product doesn’t go the audience you wanted to you have to

change and adapt to for the future and make it more appealing to the audience you wanted to aim for

• Example• An example of this would be barb as they record data of people who

watch TV and you can see how many people have watched a certain show.

Market Research• Definition• Finding out about the market place and where a product is sold. • Advantages• Find out what products are out there to show you if it has been

done before and to see if you wont get sued for your ideas if you decide to make your product.

• Disadvantages• Not doing enough research and selling a product that is already out

could get copyrighted if the product you are trying to bring out.• Example • Taking coca cola and making your own style of it and calling it coke.

Production Research• Definition• Finding information and recourses required to produce a piece of media. • Advantages• You know what soft wear you need to complete your product and also you will

be able to know how you are going to bring out your product to the world and what group of people you are aiming for.

• Disadvantages• Might not have the recourses to create the product so you will have to spend the

money you were going to use on making a physical copy of your product and you will have to spend that money on the soft wear to help make your product.

• Example• Say you needed premier pro to create your product but you didn’t have it you

would have to invest the money you were going to spend on props and travel and make cuts so you can buy the right soft wear.

– Research that is not influenced by personal feelings or opinions

• Subjective– Research that has been influenced by personal feelings or opinions

• Valid

– Whether the research proposed is able to answer the intended outcome/question

• Reliable• Research that produces accurate and consistent results
