The Writing Process

Writing can be a daunting task unless one knows the proper steps to successfully write an essay. Without these following steps, one can be lost when it comes to completing a well-written essay:

1. Prewriting2. Outlining the structure of ideas3. Writing a rough draft4. Revising5. Editing

1. PrewritingPrewriting is the step in which you bring all of your thoughts and insight to paper and/or computer screen. This step is where you would decide on a topic that best fits your essay. You can do this by using these four strategies:

1. Using experience and observations2. Reading3. Freewriting4. Asking questions

These steps will help you choose the topic of your essay.

2. OUTLINING THE STRUCTURE OF IDEAS

In this step, you take what you gathered from your prewriting strategies and structure your essay. Outlining allows you to organize your ideas and focus on the main points of your essay.

3. WRITING A ROUGH DRAFT

Once the outline has been written, the next step is to write the initial draft of the essay. This should be done by using the information you gathered in step 1 and the outline you created in step 2.

4. REVISING

Here one can read over their essay and see if they find any holes that need to be filled with more information and/or moving parts of your essay around to give better clarity of what is written.

5. EDITING

Editing is the step where you revise and objectify your essay to grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.

With using these 5 steps, you will have successfully written a well-written essay. In the future, these 5 steps will always guarantee success in writing an essay.
