The Titanic disaster

The Titanic was a Brithish passenger ship. It was an enormous ship and a lot of people thought it was unsinkable. Unfortunately, that wasn’t true. The Titanic sank on its first journey from England to America on 14th April 1912. It was a terrible disaster and about 1500 people died.

What was the Titanic like?It was a very big and luxurious ship. The passenger stayed in first, second or third class sections. The first class section was the best. It had a swimming pool, a gym, restaurants, cafés and large, elegant cabins with private bathrooms. The second class sectionon on the Titanic was similar to first class on other ship at the time. The third class was also good, but it wasn’t like ships today! There were only two baths for all 706 passengers in third class.

Were all the passengers British? No, they wern’t. There were the American

millionaires Benjamin Guggernheim and John Astor IV, and there were also hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain, Ireland and other European countries. They wanted to start a new life in the USA.

When and why did the Titanic sink?

The Titanic sank four days after it left the port of Southampton in England. It hit an icerberg in the Atlantic Ocean. The icerberg made a hole that was 91 metres long and a lot of water entered the ship. The Titanic sank in about three hours.

What was the weather like on the night of the

disaster?

It was freezing, but it was a calm night. There weren’t any clouds in the sky and it wasn’t windy. There was no moon that night and it was difficult to see things in the distance. This contributed to the disaster.

Why did a lot of people die in the disaster?

A lot of people died because the ship didn’t have enough lifeboats! Each lifeboats held a maximum of 65 people. The order was for women and children to get into the lifeboats first, but many men from first class also got into the lifeboats for them. About 38% of the first class passengers died, but 75% of the third class passengers died.
