In Sicily the almond blossoms are considered the first sign of spring; once the pretty pink and white blossoms begin to appear, we know that winter is over.

• The Sagra del

Mandorlo in Fiore

(Almond Blossom

Festival) originated in

1934 in Naro, a town

in the province of

Agrigento.

• It was born with the intention to commercialize

typical Sicilian products, in the surroundings of

almond trees in blossom.

The festival lasts about 10 days and events include concerts and dances featuring traditional music and regional folk costumes. A fireworks show and a children’s parade where the participants wear colourful and elaborate costumes are other significant moments.

The festival ends with a Big Paradeof all the folk groups, Sicilian carts and marching bands that move from the city centre to the Valley of the Temples, with a final show at the Temple of Concord.
