BLOOD MONEY The right definition of 'Blood

Money' is the money paid by the murderer to victims family as an act of penance. Veronica who sees her mom responsible for Adrian suicide refers the money Sarah left to Tony, Adrian's friend and most likely to be  the last surviving kin  of Adrian as blood money.

SYMBOLS1. Adrian's Diary More than just Adrian's thoughts leading up his

suicide, this diary symbolizes Tony's past life, when he was really friends with Adrian and dating Veronica. He is desperately chasing after this past and the diary, not to learn more about Adrian's last days, but to rediscover the truth

2. Severn Bore This natural event in which the river Severn reacts

with the ocean and causes a wave represents the impossible in Tony's life and how it can still take place, no matter how logically ridiculous it might seem. More specifically, it can symbolize his rekindling of his relationship with Veronica.

Page 23: The Sense of an Ending overview

3. Adrian's Math Formula Quite literally this seemingly mismatched

jumble of symbols and variables holds the key to the events leading to Adrian's suicide (A=Anthony/Adrian B=Baby M=Mother V=Veronica). As soon as Tony realizes the truth in the pub he is able to decipher this.

4. Fruit cake 5. Chips
