THE EVOLUTION OF RESEARCH Innovations to Enhance Search & Discovery

Starting last fall we starting introducing several key enhancements to the Web of Science to better connect with researchers and faculty, keeping pace with changes in workflow research production around the world.

Web of Science and Google Scholar are forging a unique collaboration to make the Web of Science instantly discoverable and bringing the power of our citation connections to the open web.

Web of Science customers will be able to view and access Web of Science citation counts directly from a Google Scholar search. Reciprocal links will provide an easy path to full-text with links back out to Google Scholar.

In January, the Web of Science will have an all new look and feel. This release directly addresses customer requests for a more intuitive and easier search experience – while maintaining the advanced search capabilities our seasoned researchers and power users expect.

Developed with the emerging needs of the researcher in mind, our January release will provide a simpler search and discovery environment all branded under the banner of the Web of Science.

We are bringing new regional content to Web of Science customers and making full text seamlessly available for open access journals.

The October launch of the new SciELO Citation Index, trial access to the Chinese Science Citation Database and the upcoming 2014 launch of the new Korean Journal Database brings even more quality, impactful regional content to what is already the largest and most authoritative citation resource.

THE NEXT PHASE OF RESEARCH DISCOVERY

Easier Research Discovery

We are collaborating with Google Scholar to make the Web of Science instantly discoverable from a Google Scholar search.

In late 2013 a Thomson Reuters and Google Scholar collaboration was successfully piloted with clear indicators of value to the researcher:

• Compared to Library Discovery tools, we saw significantly more searches leading into Web of Science sessions. This varies based on how the Library Discovery tools have been linking to us, but compared to two major services we saw 3 to 4 times as many link-ins during the pilot

• Almost all pilot schools showed inbound and outbound link usage, confirming an assumption that integration has utility for researchers

Integration of Google Scholar and Web of Science was added for most customers earlier this year. We now have almost all Web of Science customers with Google Scholar showing WoS citation counts within Google Scholar

Links from Google for older articles will sometimes lead to content

outside a customer’s WOS subscription .

Users will see a limited view of citing articles that fall outside the associated Web of Science

Value of Google Scholar collaboration for the library• We believe the collaboration adds value to the library’s

Web of Science subscription. Many more library users are exposed to links into the Web of Science and the library gets more utility from their subscription by virtue of indexing Web of Science within Google Scholar

– Increases usage and utility from Web of Science investment

– Improves the quality and usefulness of Google Scholar (on campus)

– Automatically ‘markets’ one of the libraries key databases

GOOGLE SCHOLAR/WEB OF SCIENCE COVERAGE AND COMMENTARY • The GS collaboration has received many positive comments over Twitter as

well as coverage from university library blogs. Some snapshots:

“This [linkage] should help you to find the full text of articles quicker and to be confident that you are accessing good quality citations.” – ejournals at University of Cambridge

“I do wish that Web of Science had thought of a better label in their interface to Google Scholar; it’s confusing in Web of Science to have the “Full Text” link to our SFX service right next to a link to Google Scholar that’s labeled “Look up full-text” (which is really what the “Full Text” does).” - Baruch College Library Blog

“This linkage will allow the researcher to instantaneously access Web of Science and Google Scholar, and explore potentially valuable sources that may not have been discoverable by using only one.” – Georgia State University Library

Value of Google Scholar collaborationfor the Researcher• It enables useful and effective functionality for researchers

or anyone using Google Scholar or Web of Science.– A way to help when visually filtering results on Google Scholar

• Was that article covered in Web of Science?• Did it have as many citations within Web of Science?

– Fast, Easy, Smart connections in situ

• Start Web of Science research from Google Scholar in one click– What was citing that article within the Web of Science?– I can get the bibliography (cited refs) at Web of Science– I can save sets of records easily at Web of Science.

• From Web of Science– Can I find a copy of the article somehow? (I know Google Scholar is

usually good for that)?
