THE LOCATION OF INDUSTRY
An overview of the factors which affect where industry sets up.
The classification of industry
•PRIMARY – Usually deals raw materials, e.g. Fishing and Forestry.
• SECONDARY – Industries that involve producing and manufacturing goods.
• TERTIARY - Provides a service to the community.
• QUATERNARY – The most high tech and recent of the industry classifications, usually involving research and development.
Physical Factors
• ACCESSIBILTIY The site of a new
factory needs to be easily accessible for the import and export of materials.
• CLIMATE The climate needs
to attract workers to the area.
Other Physical Factors Include
• LAND The site of an
industry needs to have flat land and room to expand should the company become successful
• POWER No longer does
industry have to set up near a power source as industries can now gain power from the national grid
Socio-Economic Factors
• CAPITAL Companies cannot
set up their industry without this. A very important factor
• COMMUNICATION Most have
communication links to the city and the rest of the world
• GOVERNMENT POLICY
Many companies are given incentives to set up in a new country
• LABOUR SUPPLY Many companies
often set up in or around large cities due to the shear demand for labour
• MARKETS These markets are
absolutely vital to industry today. No longer are they local but some world wide
