Learning Outcomes

To understand the role of the key person and how they put together Learning Journeys

To revise the theory behind the Key Person Approach

To understand the practical application of the Key Person system and look at it critically

Look at the policies and procedures related to the key person approach

Page 4: The key person approach power point moodle

Where did it come from?

Look back at the Prezipresentation ‘Pioneers and Philosophies that Influenced the EYFS’ looking for the theory that influence the key person approach.

Question:

5-10 minutes

1.Who is the man in the picture?

2. What is his theory?

3. Who worked with him?

What does a key person do?

The Key Person is responsible for:•Primary Care•Documentation•Forming a bond with a child so that they have a secure base in the setting•Forming a trusting relationship with families

Question:5 minutesFrom your point of view:What do you think parents might expect from their key person?

Page 6: The key person approach power point moodle

From my experience...

Interested Parents:•Will expect more but will contribute a lot to the learning of their child.•Form strong bonds with their key person and value their opinions.•Will ask for advice on things that worry them•May confide in their key person•Will want to see their child’s Learning Journey’s regularly•Will expect moderately lengthy handovers•Become very much a part of the ‘Learning Community’ (Think of Reggio Emilia and Sustained Shared thinking)

Uninterested Parents:•Will try make handovers as short as possible, even if you have something to discuss.•Will usually bypass their key person and go to the Nursery Manager if they have a problem.•May not look at their child’s Learning Journey unless encouraged.•Do not always value suggestions made by Key People•Can often miss important information because they do not look at notice boards or letters sent home.

Page 7: The key person approach power point moodle

How is it implemented?

Settling In

Relationships take time and effort to work. To get a child settled into

nursery , their Key Person will need to make

sure they feel at home.

•They do this through:

•Settling sessions

•Giving them a space for their things

•Spending time with them, assessing their

needs, wants and interests.

•Getting other children within the setting to engage with them.

Page 8: The key person approach power point moodle

Daily Routine

Having a key person means that no child is forgotten in the busy nursery setting.

They know a child’s personal needs, wants and interests and plan accordingly.

In some settings (Norland Nursery being one of them) the Key Person follows the routine that a child has at home. This means that sleep and meal times vary per child.

Question 2 minutes: How do you think you would manage the different needs of the children in your care?

Page 9: The key person approach power point moodle

Achieve Economic Well Being

Enjoy and Achieve

Be Healthy

Stay Safe

Make a Positive Contribution

How does the Key Person follow Policy and Implement Procedure?

Activity: 10 minutesThink about how Key People help children to Be Healthy, Enjoy and Achieve and Stay Safe. Think about how Key People can help

parents to make a Positive Contribution. You may like to use the document ‘NorlandNursery Policy and Procedures’ on Moodle

to help you.If you feel you have a good grasp on Policies and procedures from the team teach and the

previous lecture, don’t complete this activity.

What are the problems with the key person approach?

Page 11: The key person approach power point moodle

The Learning Journey

We will now take a look at a real Learning Journey

How much information is required?

DocumentationThe Key Person is responsible for keeping track of a child’s development through

ongoing Observation, Assessment and Planning (OAP cycle)

Page 12: The key person approach power point moodle

The Front Cover

The Front Sheet

Like the Progress Check Age Two, settings and Key People can add ass much creativity and individuality to Learning Journeys, so long as they contain the right information.

Page 13: The key person approach power point moodle

PossibleLinesOfDevelopment

The current PLOD is at the front of the Learning Journey. It is a summary of activities that the Key Person feels would be suitable for that individual child, separated into the Prime and Specific Areas from the EYFS Development Matters.

Page 14: The key person approach power point moodle

The Overview

Most Learning Journey’s will contain an overview of a child’s learning for quick reference. They are checked off when the child enters the setting (depending on attendance) and then at the end of each term.

Page 15: The key person approach power point moodle

Observations

OFSTED requires Learning Journey’s to contain at least four different types of observation. Each will be assessed and cross-referenced with the EYFS.

Question

5 minutes

Why do you think it is important to include a range of observation types?

Page 16: The key person approach power point moodle

Parental Contribution

In this Learning Journey, the parents of D were encouraged to find the stages in the EYFS that

they felt she was capable of. They also contributed

observations, photographs and examples of art work that D had done at home.

School Transition

Forms

Similar to a Progress Check Age Two, the Key Person will complete a School Transition Form.

•They contain (from left to right)

•A front sheet

•Likes/Dislikes, Friends and Personality

•EYFS Split into the Prime and Specific areas

•Space for key people and parents to write a bit about the child as they know them.
