The Indie GenreThe typical features associated with the indie genre are things such as the clothing, props etc. For example, in the indie genre we commonly see instruments being

played, typically guitars and drums. This may be because ‘indie’ is an independent twist on the rock genre which also commonly uses instruments such as guitars

and drum sets. Here are some examples:

The Indie GenreGenerally, the target audience for the

indie genre are males between the ages of 15-24. This is likely because they feel that they can associate certain aspects of their

lives with the band and/or song. For example, the Arctic Monkeys ages are

between 30-31. Therefore, the audience may aspire to be like the artists and look up to them as artists making their target

age be a little younger than the band themselves.

The Indie GenreThe typical clothes seen to be worn by the indie genre are usually dark coloured items such as black leather jackets, black jeans and Chelsea style boots. Their hair is usually a ‘rockabilly’ style similar to the 1950s style cuts. This works together with the leather jackets to portray a ‘rock star’ image.

The Indie GenreWhilst researching the indie genre we found that the common effect used in both the videos and pictures of the band were in a black and white effect. An example of a music video that uses this is ‘Daddy Issues’ by The Neighbourhood. Interestingly a video that directly mentions the black and white effect is ‘Girls’ by The 1975. They say at the beginning “Everything feels totally wrong it’s so ‘pop’- were not a pop band and it feels like a really pop video the whole scenarios not really what were about, it needs to be black and white for a start” However, they then proceed to present the music video using bright colours which challenges the typical conventions of an indie music video.
