Knowledge and learning in Islam is a duty on every Muslim :It was also related by Anas b. Malik that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” [Sunan Ibn Mâjah (224) and others] The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever seeks a way to acquire knowledge Allah will make easy his way to Paradise.” [Sahîh Muslim (2699)] Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal had said: “We will accompany the inkpot until our death.” This explains why the early Muslim scholars were enthusiastic about science and they did discover many facts in different scientific fields long before the west could be scientifically illuminated. The following slides to what extent Islam stressed the importance of science.

If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man. The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like that of the moon, on the night when it is

The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham (money), leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion. (Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3634).
