As the Iliad begins…

The Greeks and the Trojans have been at war for ten years

The Achaean army faces a plague. At the urging of Hera, Achilles calls an assembly to discuss the crisis

The meeting leads to a fight between Achilles and Agamemnon

The plague began by…

Agamemnon has Chryses’ daughter, Chryseis

Chryses offered gifts for his daughters return but Agamemnon refused

Chryses then prayed to Apollo to get back at Agamemnon and the other Greeks

Apollo shoots arrows of plague down upon the Greek army

Achilles asks Calchas to reveal cause of plague

Calchas says it’s because Agamemnon won’t give Chryseis back

An angry Agamemnon says he will only give Chryseis back if he can take Achille’s girl Briseis

Agamemnon and Achilles argue…

Angered by Agamemnon’s threat to take Briseis, Achilles threatens to withdraw from battle

Agamemnon threatens to take Briseis himself from Achilles tent

Achilles draws his sword to kill Agamemnon when…

Goddess Athena grabs Achilles by the hair and talks him out of killing him

Agamemnon gives Chryseis back to her father

Agamemnon then sends his men take Briseis from Achille’s tent and bring her to him

Apollo lifts the plague

Achilles prays to his mother Thetis…

He tells his mother what is going on with him and Agamemnon

He prays to her to ask Zeus to punish the Achaeans

After the plague…

Achilles refused to fight in battle after fight with Agamemnon

Thetis agrees to ask Zeus to help the Trojans as Achilles asked her.
