The wind Farm: 5 windmills turbines

The five windmills turbines, with 2.3 MW each, have a capacity of 11.5 megawatts with a rotor of

three blades located up 64 meters high

of El Hierro Island

Electricity comes from wind power

and pumped hydro storage: the wind power will be used

to keep the pumped hydro reservoirs full, allowing the hydro plant to function as a baseload and load-following generation

source

Page 5: The Hierro Island Reservoir

The wind Farm: 5 wind windmills turbines

Five windmills on the northeastern end of the island will power a pumping station

that, when the wind is blowing, will drive water 2,300 feet uphill, from a small, 5

million-cubic-foot (150,000-cu-m) reservoir down by the shore to a larger, 19 million-

cubic-foot (550,000-cu-m) reservoir snuggled into one of the island’s volcanic

craters.

When the wind abates, water from the top depository will be released, along 1.8 miles (3 km)

of mostly camouflaged pipes, into the bottom one, and the

pressure of that falling water will drive six hydraulic turbines.

The superior deposit ,La Caldera is located in an inactive volcanic crater, with

380.000m3, 700m high, which is interconnected with a lower reservoir from the penstocks: two pipes of 3 kilometers long

Page 8: The Hierro Island Reservoir

The penstocks for the pumped-storage plant on El Hierro

carry water to and from the turbines and pumps.

The capability of the 1.5 MW pumps to regulate the power consumed through frequency regulators up to 500 kW each or

wind turbine-generator frequency regulation capability.

The inferior deposit has 150.000 cubic meters and is located near the thermal plant of Llanos Blancos .

The total power of the generator groups , with

11.3 mw.a central pump is

constituted by two pumps groups 1,500 kW and 6 kW pumps 500 groups with a

demanding energy for the population. The energy which is not consumed is sent pumped up to superior deposit

The hydro-wind power plant

It is achieved transform an intermittent power source into a controlled and

constant electricity supply, maximizing the use of wind energy. Thus, the power station operates as a reserve to support

only during periods of no wind, minimizing the consumption of fossil

fuels.
