King James was the king of England over 400 years ago. He

introduced harsh laws against Catholics.

The Gunpowder Plot

Every autumn there was a special ceremony, when King James would be at the Houses of Parliament

Page 3: The gunpowder plot

Guy Fawkes and his friends were some of the people who did not like the king.

They plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament when the king was there.

Page 4: The gunpowder plot

Underneath the Houses of Parliament were many cellars. Guy Fawkes and his friends

planned to put barrels of gunpowder in one of these cellars, ready to blow up the king.

Guy Fawkes was put in charge of guarding the gunpowder.

A few weeks before they were going to blow up Parliament, the King found out

what had been planned, and on the morning of the 5th November, soldiers

searched the cellars.

In one of the cellars, they found Guy Fawkes, ready and waiting to light the gunpowder.

The soldiers arrested Guy, and took him to the Tower of London, where they kept

him prisoner.

They also arrested the other plotters and took them to the tower as well.

To celebrate that he had survived, King James said that people

should have a big bonfire and light fireworks every year on November

5th.

Firework Displays where I live

The Saturday before November 5th there is normally a Guy competition at 6.30pm, bonfire lighting at 6.45pm followed by a firework display at 7.15pm, plus burgers, hot dogs, soup, teas, a bar and an inflatable slide.

Traditional Bonfire Night Food

The bonfires are used to cook potatoes wrapped in foil and to heat up soup.

The traditional cake eaten on bonfire night is Parkin Cake.

treason Should ever be forgot.”
