THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING MTB-
MLE
Principle 1: KNOWN TO THE UNKNOWN
Learning requires meaning. We learn when we use what we already know to help us understand what is new.
Second language learners use what they know in their own language (significant in reading).
Principle 2: LANGUAGE AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT
Well-developed
L1
Easy and full
acquisition of L2, L3,
etc.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEME
NT
Principle 3: COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENTStudents who use their multilingual skills
have been shown to develop both the cognitive flexibility and divergent thinking
Usage of High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
Principle 4: DISCOVERY LEARNINGWe learn when someone who already
understands the new idea or task helps us to “discover” the new idea and then use it meaningfully.
Principle 5: ACTIVE LEARNING
Peer interaction – peers and teacher Second language active learning – learners gain
confidence during in the “hear-see-do” activity. Purposeful talk – talking make us sense of new ideas and
information
Principle 6: MEANING AND ACCURACY
Successful language learning involves hearing, speaking, reading and writing activities that focus on both MEANING and ACCURACY
Principle 7: LANGUAGE LEARNING/LANGUAGE TRANSFERLanguage Transfer - refers to speakers or
writers (learners) applying knowledge from one language to another language.
It takes a minimum of 2 years to learn basic communicative skills in a second language when society supports that learning.
Errors are normal part of L2 learning.
Principle 8: AFFECTIVE COMPONENT
Valuing the home language/ culture. Valuing students with talents in their home
language more powerfully enables learning than just valuing learners of English whose home language is irrelevant to academic success.
Learners from ethno-linguistic groups thrive in a welcoming learning environment.
APPLICATION Each group will present a 3-minute role play (including brief
explanation afterward) of a visible scenario in the application of the assigned Guiding Principles.
There will be an 8 minute allotted time for the preparation and practice. Principle 1. Known to the Unknown (GROUP 1) Principle 2. Language and Academic Development (GROUP 1) Principle 3. Cognitive Development (GROUP 2) Principle 4. Discovery Learning (GROUP 2) Principle 5. Active Learning (GROUP 3) Principle 6. Meaning and Accuracy (GROUP 3) Principle 7. Language Learning/Language Transfer (GROUP 4) Principle 8. Affective Component (GROUP 4)
EVALUATION Instruction:Given with 5-8 minutes, each learner will make a creative output (illustrated symbol, slogan, comics, poster, poem, etc.) in a long bond paper about the importance of MTB-MLE to the Filipino learners. The output should be explained at the back of the paper in at least 2-5 sentences only.
