The Garbage Truck Driver

Page 2: The Garbage Truck Driver

Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day?

Page 3: The Garbage Truck Driver

Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant you're probably set back on your heels.

Page 4: The Garbage Truck Driver

However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly one can get back their focus on what's important.

Page 5: The Garbage Truck Driver

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here's what happened.

Page 6: The Garbage Truck Driver

I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for….

Page 7: The Garbage Truck Driver

Grand Central Station

Page 8: The Garbage Truck Driver

We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

Page 9: The Garbage Truck Driver

My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!

Page 10: The Garbage Truck Driver

The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around

Page 11: The Garbage Truck Driver

and he started yelling bad words at us.

Page 12: The Garbage Truck Driver

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.

Page 13: The Garbage Truck Driver

And I mean, he was friendly.

Page 14: The Garbage Truck Driver

So, I said….

Page 15: The Garbage Truck Driver

Why did you just do that ?

Page 16: The Garbage Truck Driver

This guy almost ruined your car and sent us

Page 17: The Garbage Truck Driver

to the hospital!

Page 18: The Garbage Truck Driver

And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call

Page 19: The Garbage Truck Driver

'The Law of the Garbage Truck.’

Page 20: The Garbage Truck Driver

'Many people are like garbage trucks.

Page 21: The Garbage Truck Driver

They run around full of garbage, full of frustration,

Page 22: The Garbage Truck Driver

full of anger, and full of disappointment.

Page 23: The Garbage Truck Driver

As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it.

Page 24: The Garbage Truck Driver

And if you let them, they'll dump it on you.

Page 25: The Garbage Truck Driver

When someone wants to dump on you

Page 26: The Garbage Truck Driver

don't take it personally.

Page 27: The Garbage Truck Driver

You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on

Page 28: The Garbage Truck Driver

You'll be happy you did.

Page 29: The Garbage Truck Driver

So this was it: The 'Law of the Garbage Truck.’

Page 30: The Garbage Truck Driver

I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me?

Page 31: The Garbage Truck Driver

And how often do I take their garbage

Page 32: The Garbage Truck Driver

and spread it to other people

Page 33: The Garbage Truck Driver

at work, at home, on the streets?

Page 34: The Garbage Truck Driver

It was that day I said, 'I'm not going to do it anymore.

Page 35: The Garbage Truck Driver

I began to see garbage trucks. Like in the movie 'The Sixth Sense,'

Page 36: The Garbage Truck Driver

the little boy said, 'I see Dead People.’

Page 37: The Garbage Truck Driver

Well, now 'I see Garbage Trucks.'

Page 38: The Garbage Truck Driver

I see the load they're carrying.

Page 39: The Garbage Truck Driver

I see them coming to drop it off.

Page 40: The Garbage Truck Driver

And like my Taxi Driver, I don't make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.

Page 41: The Garbage Truck Driver

One of my favorite football players of all time

Page 42: The Garbage Truck Driver

Walter Payton

Page 43: The Garbage Truck Driver

did this every day on the football field.

Page 44: The Garbage Truck Driver

He would jump up as quickly as he hit the ground after being tackled.

Page 45: The Garbage Truck Driver

He never dwelled on a hit.

Page 46: The Garbage Truck Driver

Payton was ready to make the next play his best.

Page 47: The Garbage Truck Driver

Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting.

Page 48: The Garbage Truck Driver

Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses.

Page 49: The Garbage Truck Driver

Leaders and parents know that they have to be fully present, and at their best for the people they care about.

Page 50: The Garbage Truck Driver

The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day.

Page 51: The Garbage Truck Driver

What about you?

Page 52: The Garbage Truck Driver

What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by?

Page 53: The Garbage Truck Driver

Here's my bet. You'll be happier.

Page 54: The Garbage Truck Driver

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets

Page 55: The Garbage Truck Driver

so……

Page 56: The Garbage Truck Driver

Love the people who treat you right.

Page 57: The Garbage Truck Driver

Forget about the ones who don't.

Page 58: The Garbage Truck Driver

Believe that everything happens for a reason.

Page 59: The Garbage Truck Driver

If you get a chance, TAKE IT!

Page 60: The Garbage Truck Driver

If it changes your life, LET IT!

Page 61: The Garbage Truck Driver

Nobody said it would be easy... They just promised it would be worth it!

Page 62: The Garbage Truck Driver

Beware of Garbage Trucks
