Nativism
Many citizens were not happy about the foreigners moving into the United States and taking jobs that would otherwise be there for them and their children.
It was common for foreigners to be mistreated by United States Citizens because for lack of another word they were jealous.
Nativism
I understand where the American Citizens were coming from, but they way they treated the foreigners was wrong.
The Americans went as far as physical harm and murder to deter foreigners from taking jobs in the United States.
