The Crown of Castile was a medieval and modern state in the Iberian Peninsula that formed in 1230 as a result of the union of the crowns and parliaments of the kingdoms of Castile and León. Christians defeated Muslims at Navas de Tolosa.Christian kings conquered almost all of Andalusia.

Portugal became independent.

Ferdinand III united Castile and León.He founded the Crown of Castile.

•Castile → unified state.→ same institutions and same laws.

•Castilian King → he had great power.→ he made laws, declared war and passed

judgements.

•Castilian Cortes → approve new taxes.→ reject new taxes.

He was the King of Castile from 1217 and  León from 1230. He finished the work

done by his maternal grandfather Alfonso VIII and consolidated the “Reconquista”. In 1231, he permanently united Castile and León. He was canonozed in 1671 and, in

Spanish, he is Fernando el Santo, San Fernando or San Fernando Rey.

•Merino sheep was very important. Wool → exported→ used in the

textile industry

•Mestas → sheep breeders’ assemblies.→ Honourable Council of the Mesta (1273)→ very powerful.

•Trade fairs were very important → Medina del Campo
