´Well…,’ Lord Canterville interrupts, but Mr Otis says, ‘Don’t worry Lord Canterville, I want to buy your house and your…ghost.’

Mr Otis is married and has four children, a son called Washington, a daughter called Virginia and two happy noisy twin boys. Mr Otis says, ‘Lord Canterville says there is a ghost in the house!’ ‘A ghost! How exciting !’ say the twins.

Mrs Otis points to the floor . ‘What is that?’ she asks. ‘Oh! That is the blood of Sir Simon Canterville’s wife, ‘ says Mrs Umney , the housekeeper.’He killed her right here in 1575.’’In 1575? That’s impossible!’ says Mr Otis. ‘Yes !’ continues Mrs Umney, ‘and he disappeared…but now he is a ghost!! The Canterville Ghost!

Mr Otis’ son, Washington, takes a small black crayon . ‘Pinkerton special cleaner cleans this!’. The blood disappears.

But the next morning THE BLOOD IS ON THE FLOOR AGAIN! Mr Otis doesn’t understand. The boys dance and sing. ‘It is the ghost!’’Don’t be silly!’ says Mrs Otis.

The night is windy and Mr Otis hears a noise. It is the noise of chains on the floor…CLANK CLANK CLANK!! ‘Oh! Says Mr Otis, ‘What’s that?’

Mr Otis sees the ghost of Sir Simon Canterville. He offers him oil for the noisy chains. The ghost is angry. Suddenly a big pillow flies past the ghost head and he jumps. He goes through the wall.

Sir Simon visits the Otis family again and again. He tries different things. He even tries saying a poem…

…but nothing works!! The Otis family is not afraid of ghosts!!

One night Sir Simon is on his way to the twin’s room when suddenly he sees … A GHOST! Sir Simon runs!

Sir Simon goes to his room and hides under the bed. Then, he decides to speak to the ghost. He wants to be friends with him.

Sir Simon speaks to the ghost but…the ghost in on the floor. It isn’t a real ghost! It is a sheet, a brush and a pumpkin!

Now Sir Simon is in his room. He is very sad and afraid of the twins! One sunny day, he looks out of the window and sees Mr Otis’ daughter, Virginia, riding on a horse with her friend, the Duke of Cheshire.

Virgina comes into the house. She is about to go up the stairs to her room when she sees a green light.

The light comes from under a door. She opens the door and sees the ghost on a chair next to the table. He is sad. ‘Poor ghost!’ she says, ‘What’s the matter?’

The ghost looks at Virginia. ‘What’s the matter?’ he says.’I can’t sleep and I am tired. I want to sleep in the garden under the big tree near the wood. I want to listen to the silence and have no yesterday and no tomorrow. But I have to stay here with your family and it isn’t easy!’

Virginia says ,’Poor Sir Simon! Can I help you?’ ‘Yes, you can! I am bad but you are good. Come with me and ask the Angel of Death to forgive me and then I can sleep.’ Virginia is afraid but helps Sir Simon .

The ghost and Virginia walk through a wall to find the Angel . They disappear …

Everyone looks for Virginia . Lord Cheshire, who is in love with Virginia, runs upstairs and downstairs and in the garden. ‘Virginia, Virginia! Where are you?’ he shouts.

Suddenly they hear a big CRASH and Virginia appears. She has got an old box in her hand with some beautiful jewels. She looks at her family and says, ‘You can’t see Sir Simon again.’

Virginia, her father and mother and brothers go to the ghost room. They can see a skeleton chained to a wall. ‘Poor Sir Simon! His wife’s brothers chained him to the wall and he died of hunger!The twins say ‘Wow! A skeleton and chains!’

They bury Sir Simon in the garden under the big tree near the wood. Lord Canterville comes too. Mr Otis tells him about the jewels but he gives them to Virginia.

Virginia marries the Duke of Cheshire. They visit Sir Simon’s grave some years later. The Duke wants to know what happened when Virginia was with the ghost. But Virginia says she can’t tell him, that the ghost helped her understand about Life and Death and that Love is stronger than both.
