THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF THESSALONICA

HEARD, RECEIVED, AND CAST THE GOOD NEWS

GREETINGS FROM PAUL 1

This letter is from Paul, Silas, and Timothy.

We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God the Father and

the Lord Jesus Christ.

May God give you GRACE and PEACE.

THE FAITH OF THE THESSALONIAN BELIEVERS, DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS 2

We always thank God for all of you and constantly pray for you.

3 As we pray to our God and Father about you,

we think of your faithful work, your loving deeds, and the enduring hope you have

because of our Lord Jesus Christ.

THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS - Loved And Chosen 4

Dear brothers and sisters,

We know that God loves you and has chosen you to be His own people.

5 For when we brought you the Good News,

it was not only with words but also with power,

for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true.

And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you.

THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Received The Message 6

So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering

the message brought you.

In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord.

7 As a result, you have become an example to all the believers

in Greece— throughout both Macedonia and

Achaia.

THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS – The Message Rings Out From

8 And now the word of the Lord

is ringing out from you

to people everywhere,

even beyond Macedonia and

Achaia,

for wherever we go

we find people telling us about your faith in God.

We don’t need to tell them about it, 9

for they keep talking about

the wonderful welcome you gave us and

how you turned away from idols

to serve the living and true God.

THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS – They Look For His Return

10 And they speak of how you are looking forward

to the coming of God’s Son

from heaven—

Jesus,

whom God raised from the dead.

He is the one who has rescued us from

the terrors of the coming judgment.

1 Thessalonians 2

New Living Translation (NLT)

PAUL REMEMBERS AND ASK IF THE THESSALONIANS REMEMBER

PAUL REMEMBERS HIS VISIT TO THE DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS 1

Dear brothers and sisters,

You yourselves know, that our visit to you was not a failure. 2

You know how badly we had been treated at Philippi just before we came to you and

how much we suffered there.

PAUL REMEMBERS HIS VISIT To Boldly Declare The Good News

Yet our God gave us the courage to declare His Good News to you boldly, in spite of great opposition.

PAUL REMEMBERS HIS VISIT To Truthfully Declare The Good News 3

So you can see we were not preaching with any deceit or impure motives or trickery.

PAUL REMEMBERS HIS VISIT To Please God And Approved By God 4

For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News.

Our purpose is to please God, is not to please people.

God alone examines the motives of our hearts.

PAUL REMEMBERS HIS VISIT To Act Without Pretense 5

As you well know, never once did we try to win you with flattery, And

God is our witness that we were not pretending to be your friends just to get your money!

6 As for human praise, we have never sought it from you or anyone else.

PAUL REMEMBERS HIS VISIT To Boldly Declare The Good News 7

As apostles of Christ we certainly had a right to make some demands of you, but instead

we were like children among you. Or we were like a mother feeding and caring for her own children.

8 We loved you so much that

we shared with you not only God’s Good News but our own lives, too.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Do You Remember?

9 Dear brothers and sisters,

Don’t you remember,

how hard we worked among you?

Night and day we toiled to earn a living

so that we would not be a burden to any of you

as we preached God’s Good News to you.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Remember Our Devotion To You

10 You yourselves are our witnesses—and also

God is our witness —

that we were devout and

honest and

faultless toward all of you believers.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Remember Our Fatherly Care For You

11 And

you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children. 12

We pleaded with you,

encouraged you, and

urged you to live your lives

in a way that God would consider worthy.

For God called you

to share in His Kingdom and glory.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – You Received And Accepted His Message

13 Therefore,

we never stop thanking God that

when you received His message from us,

you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas.

You accepted what we said as the very word of God—

which, of course, it is.

And this word

continues to work in you who believe.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – You Suffered Because You Believed

14 Dear brothers and sisters,

you then suffered persecution from your own countrymen.

In this way,

you imitated the believers in God’s churches in Judea

who, suffered from their own people, the Jews,

because of their belief in Christ Jesus,

SOME OF THE JEWS – Did What They Did and God’s Anger Caught Up With Them

15 For

some of the Jews killed the prophets, and

some of the Jews even killed the Lord Jesus.

Now they have persecuted us, too.

They fail to please God and

work against all humanity 16

as they try to keep us from preaching the Good News of salvation

to the Gentiles.

By doing this,

they continue to pile up their sins.

But the anger of God has caught up with them at last.

Seems strange that Paul did not explain what he meant by this.

But the anger of God has caught up with them at last.

http://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/1-thessalonians/2.html

(6.) They had an implacable enmity to the Gentiles, & envied them the offers of the gospel:

Forbidding the apostles to speak to the Gentiles, that they might be saved.

The means of salvation had long been confined to the Jews.

Salvation is of the Jews, says our Saviour.

And they were envious against the Gentiles, and angry that they should be admitted to share in the means of salvation.

Nothing provoked them more than our Saviour’s speaking to them at any time concerning this matter; this enraged the Jews at Jerusalem, when, in his defense, Paul told them, he was sent unto the Gentiles, Acts. 22:21.

They heard him patiently till he uttered these words, but then could endure no longer, but lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth, for it is not fit that he should live.

Thus did the Jews fill up their sins; and nothing tends more to any person or people’s filling up the measure of their sins than opposing the gospel, obstructing the progress of it, and hindering the salvation of precious souls.

For the sake of these things wrath has come upon them to the uttermost;

that is, wrath was determined against them, and would soon overtake them.

It was not many years after this that Jerusalem was destroyed, and the Jewish nation cut off by the Romans.

Note,

When the measure of any man’s iniquity is full, and he has sinned to the uttermost, then comes wrath, and that to the uttermost.

Verse 16

The *Jews believed that the *salvation from God was for them and those who became *Jews.

Thy did not accept that this *salvation was through Jesus Christ.

They looked for the Christ (the *Messiah), who would come one day to deliver them.

They could not see that Jesus is that Christ.

They were angry that Paul, Silas and Timothy taught that *salvation is through Jesus who is the Christ.

They were angry that Paul and his friends offered this good news to the *Gentiles.

They did all they could to stop Paul and his friends.

But they could not prevent the spread of the good news, because it was God who sent it.

The *Jews had, over the years, piled up *sin upon *sin.

They *persecuted the church in *Judea and here in Thessalonica.

Before this, they had killed the Christ and the *prophets.

They were adding to their wrong doing against God who, as their judge, has declared them guilty.

The time for their punishment had come.

They had refused to accept God’s Son.

They had killed him.

And now they *persecuted those who believed in him.

God’s anger had at last reached its limit.

He was so angry with them that He would soon punish them.

There was now no escape for them from the anger of God.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – We Longed To See You Again, But Could Not

17 Dear brothers and sisters,

After we were separated from you for a little while

(though our hearts never left you),

we tried very hard to come back

because of our intense longing to see you again.

18 We wanted very much to come to you, and

I, Paul, tried again and again, but Satan prevented us.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – You Are Our Pride And Joy

19 After all,

as we stand before our Lord Jesus when He returns?

what gives us hope and

joy, and

what will be our proud reward and

crown It is YOU!

20 Yes, YOU are our pride and

joy.

PAUL REMEMBERS TIMOTHY’S GOOD REPORT

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – We Sent Timothy For You

1 Finally,

when we could stand it no longer,

we decided to stay alone in Athens, and 2

we sent Timothy to visit you.

Timothy is our brother and

God’s co-worker in proclaiming

the Good News of Christ.

We sent Timothy to strengthen you,

to encourage you in your faith, and 3

to keep you

from being shaken by

the troubles you were going through.

But you know that

we are destined for such troubles.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Timothy Brought Us Good News About You

4 Even while we were with you,

we warned you that troubles would soon come—and

troubles did soon come, as you well know.

5 That is why,

when I could bear it no longer,

I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong.

I was afraid

that the tempter had gotten the best of you and

that our work had been useless.

6 But now

Timothy has just returned,

bringing us good news

about your faith and love.

Timothy reports

that you always remember our visit with joy

and

that you want to see us as much as

we want to see you.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – We Are Greatly Encouraged Because of You

7 Dear brothers and sisters,

So

we have been greatly encouraged in the midst of our troubles and suffering,

because you have remained strong in your faith.

8 It gives us new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord.

9 How we thank God for you!

Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Here Are Our Prayers for You

10 we pray earnestly for you,

night and day,

asking God to let us see you again to fill the gaps in your faith.

11 May God our Father and

our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon. And 12

may the Lord make your love

for one another and

for all people

grow and

overflow,

just as our love for you

overflows.

13 as a result,

May the Lord, make your hearts strong,

blameless, and

holy

as you stand

before God our Father

when our Lord Jesus

comes

again

with all His holy people.

Amen.

PAUL EXPRESSES THE GOAL AND HOPE OF THE THESSALONIANS

Live To Please God and Hope For Their Resurrection

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Live To Please God As We Taught YOU 1

Dear brothers and sisters,

Finally,

we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God,

as we have taught you.

You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more.

2 For

you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3

God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. 4

Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor—

5 not in lustful passion

like the pagans who do not know God and

His ways.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Do Not Do These Things, But LIVE rightly 6

Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife,

for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before.

7 God has called us to live holy lives,

not impure lives. 8

Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules

is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God,

who gives His Holy Spirit to you.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Do Not Do These things 9

But we don’t need to write to you about the importance of loving each other, for God Himself has taught you to love one another.

10 Indeed,

you already show your love for all the believers throughout Macedonia.

Dear brothers and sisters, Even so, we urge you to love them even more.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – This is Your Goal . . . . . 11

Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands,

just as we instructed you before. 12

Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – This Is Your Hope Of The Resurrection

13 Dear brothers and sisters,

And now,

we want you to know

what will happen to the believers who have died

so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.

14 For since

we believe that

Jesus died and

was raised to life again,

we believe also that

when Jesus returns,

God will bring back with Him the believers who have died.

15 We tell you this directly from the Lord:

We who are still living when the Lord returns

will not meet him ahead of those who have died.

16 For the Lord Himself

will come down from heaven

with a commanding shout,

with the voice of the archangel, and

with the trumpet call of God.

First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves.

17 Then, together with them,

we who are still alive and remain on the earth

will be caught up in the clouds

to meet the Lord in the air.

Then we will be with the Lord forever.

18 So encourage each other with these words.

New Living Translation (NLT)

PAUL’S ADVICE FOR THE LORD’S RETURN

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – The Day Of The Lord’s Return Will Be Unexpectedly Sudden 1

Dear brothers and sisters,

Now concerning how and when all this will happen, we don’t really need to write you.

2 For

you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return

will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – The Day Of The Lord’s Return Will Be Disaster for Some 3

When people are saying,

“Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them

as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – The Day Of The Lord’s Return Will Not Surprise You 4

Dear brothers and sisters,

But you aren’t in the dark about these things, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief.

5 For

you are all children of the light and of the day;

we don’t belong to darkness and night.

DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS – Stay Within The Light 6

So be on your guard, be not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.

7 Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk.

8 But

let us who live in the light be

clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet

the confidence of our salvation.

Page 17: The Book of 1 Thessalonians - Dear Brothers and Sisters

The Book of Thessalonians Version Dated December 26, 2015

The Thessalonians, Dear Brothers And Sisters

9 For

God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ,

not to pour out His anger on us. 10

Christ died for us

so that,

whether we are dead or alive

when He returns,.

we can live with Him forever 11

So

encourage each other and

build up each other,

just as you are already doing.

PAUL’S FINAL ADVICE 12

Dear brothers and sisters,

honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work.

They work hard among you and

give you spiritual guidance. 13

Show them great respect and

wholehearted love because of their work. And

live peacefully with each other.

14 Brothers and sisters,

we urge you to

warn those who are lazy.

Encourage those who are timid.

Take tender care of those who are weak.

Be patient with everyone. 15

See that no one pays back evil for evil, but

try always to do good to each other and

to all people. 16

be always joyful. 17

Never stop praying. 18

Be thankful in all circumstances,

for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 19

Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20

Do not scoff at prophecies, but 21

test everything that is said.

Hold on to what is good. 22

Stay away from every kind of evil.

PAUL’S FINAL GREETINGS 23

Now

may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and

may your whole spirit and

soul and

body be kept blameless

until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

24 God will make this happen, for

He who calls you is faithful.

25 Dear brothers and sisters,

pray for us.

26 Greet all the brothers and sisters with a sacred kiss.

27 I command you in the name of the Lord to read this letter to all the brothers and sisters.

28 May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
