Advantages (according to Europeans) of Africans vs. Native American Labor

1. Immunity to European diseases (prior exposure-- Portuguese)

2. Experience in farming, apply skill to plantations 3. Less likely to escape (did not know the “lay of the

land”) 4. Pigment of skin (more easily identifiable)

Example: If enslaved individual escaped and was captured, their skin color would likely be much darker than an average settler
