Industry and Academia see the opportunity

Long-term: Work with academia or a third party to solve a high-impact use case (augmented human decision making in a key knowledge worker role) with bleeding-edge AI technology to potentially capture a sizable first-mover advantage. - Harvard Business Review

Project teams had many technology relationships—some firms leveraging all possible partners—to address the technical requirements of the project. The same teams, however, were more selective with innovation and partners, choosing academia, start-ups, or consultants to help them innovate. - Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The lack of focus on collaboration is particularly troubling considering the lack of collaboration among industry and academia was identified as the greatest challenge related to skills among Canadian executives surveyed. - IBM Institute of Business Value

Instead, the project …squandered investment larger than the state's $8 billion annual budget. Westinghouse Corporation and other contractors allegedly used unqualified and unlicensed individuals to design aspects of two nuclear reactors at the V.C. Summer site, placing the public

health and safety at risk. Filed by the United States on behalf of the EPA on January 4, 2016, and amended on October 7, 2016, alleging that these vehicles are equipped with defeat devices in the form of computer software designed to cheat on federal emissions tests. The major excess pollutant at issue in this case is oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and is a serious health concern.

IBM worked with Florida Power & Light – the principal subsidiary of NextEra Energy Inc.- collaborate to protect and serve roughly 9 million people in Florida

using Cloud and Mobile technology.

One of the immediate needs was to address disaster recovery concerns. Today the WORS(Weather Outages & Restoration) was last put to test against Hurricane Wilma in 2005, which affected the power grid for weeks afterwards and was responsible for $21B in damages to the state of Florida alone. Due to the explosion of smart phones/devices in the marketplace, the number of user accessing this application during a natural disaster is estimated to grow from thousands to millions. The Bluemix & Softlayer solution platform provides elasticity that can burst up or scale down as the workload dynamically changes during extreme weather conditions to report outages and damages. FP&L relies on customer reports to better manage their response resources accordingly.
