1. Democracy , of thepeople, by the people, and for the
people.< Abraham Lincoln
2. WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?Democracy is a form of government inwhich
all eligible citizens participateequallyeither directly or
indirectlythrough elected representativesin theproposal,
development, and creation oflaws.
3. FIRST ARGUMENTA democraticgovernment is abetter
governmentbecause it is a moreaccountable form
ofgovernment.Democracy is better than any otherform of government
in responding tothe needs of the people. A non-democraticgovernment
may andcan respond to the peoples needs, but it all depends on the
wishes ofthe people who rule. A democracyrequires that the rulers
have toattend to the needs of the people.
4. SECOND ARGUMENTDemocracyimproves thequality of
decisionmaking.Democracy is based on consultationand discussion. A
democraticdecision always involves manypersons, discussions and
meetings. But there is a big advantage intaking time over important
decisions. This reduces the chances ofirresponsible decisions.
5. THIRD ARGUMENTDemocracy provides a method to deal
withdifferences and conflicts.People belong to different regions,
speakdifferent languages, practise differentreligions and have
different castes in ourcountry. The preferences of one group
canclash with another. The conflict can be solvedby brutal power.
Whichever group is morepowerful will dictate and others will have
toaccept that. But that would lead tounhappiness and
discontent.Democracy provides apeaceful solution to thisproblem. In
democracy, noone is a permanent loser orwinner. In India,
democracykeeps our country together.
6. FOURTH ARGUMENTDemocracyenhancesthe dignity ofcitizens.Even
if democracy does not bring aboutbetter decisions and an
accountablegovernment, it is still better than other formsof
government. Democracy is based on theprinciple of political
equality. On recognisingthat the poorest and the least educated
hasthe same status as the rich and the educated.
7. FIFTH ARGUMENTDemocracy is betterthan other forms
ofgovernment because itallows us to correct itsown mistakes. There
is a space for publicdiscussion on these mistakes andthere is a
room for correction.Either the rulers have to changetheir
decisions, or the rulers can bechanged. This cannot happen in
anon-democratic government.
8. SUM IT UP!!Democracy cannot get us everything and is not
thesolution to all problems. But it is clearly better than anyother
alternative. It offers better chances of a gooddecision , it is
likely to respect peoples own wishes andallows different kinds of
people to live together. It allowsa way of correcting its mistakes
and offers more dignity toall citizens. Thus, democracy is
considered the best formof government.
9. A democratic governmentis a better governmentbecause it is a
moreaccountable form ofgovernment.Democracy improvesthe quality of
decisionmaking.Democracy is better thanother forms of
governmentbecause it allows us tocorrect its own mistakes.Democracy
provides amethod to deal withdifferences and conflicts.Democracy
enhancesthe dignity of citizens.
