Dearest Darling Readers,

Get ready to be blown away by the simplicity of this exercise. I

am sure you will never forget this LSM.

A plane crashes on an unknown virgin island. You are one of

the exact one hundred survivors. All of you are strangers to

each other. After searching around for a while, everyone

realizes there is no source of food anywhere in sight. There is

a danger of starving to death.

On the island, there is a giant mountain that looks extremely

difficult to climb. It gives bad vibes and is surely deserted. It is

harsh and dry. Since the top of this mountain is the only place

that hasn’t been searched, some positive people (including

you) announce, climbing it is the only possibility for finding

some sort of food supply to survive. It is uncertain if anyone

will even be able to get to the top. Then it is improbable, food will be found. And then, this question, ‘Should

we waste our energy in such an uncertain endeavor?’

You and nine other survivors (five who happen to be extremely attractive members of the opposite gender),

decide to give it your all. The others follow you. On the way up the mountain, the other 90 people give up.

Some are old, some are young, some are physically weak while some are mentally and emotionally

inadequate.

You and the nine other climbers face a lot of challenges and finally make it to the top. When you get there,

your jaws drop with amazement. Looks like you have reached heaven. You discover a giant lake, trees with

fruits, and plants with vegetables. There is more than enough food to feed all one hundred survivors for the

next few months. You and the other climbers who made it to the top are ecstatic. You have realized that

starvation is no longer an issue. You all decide to relax for a little while. You play around. You eat to your

hearts content. You laugh a lot. You mingle and flirt with a very attractive person of the opposite gender.

You and your companion go for a small walk and you are amazed at a huge banyan trees with some of the

longest and strongest vines both you have ever seen in your life.

Then, you remember that the other 90 survivors are still stuck down at the bottom of the mountain. You know,

if you tried hard enough, you could figure out a way to use these vines to help the others reach the top.

Here comes the amazing question.

A) Do you use the grape vines to help the other 90 survivors make it to the top of the mountain. Doing so

would mean risking the possibility of falling off; increasingly use up your food supply, and exerting lots of time

and effort?

OR

B) Do you go on just relaxing and living your easy life with the other climbers who made it, saying that it’s

survival of the fittest. It is bad karma for the rest of those who couldn’t make it to the top!

By the way, the majority of the people atop the mountain with you, have chosen option B. If you choose option

A, you will be unpopular. Additionally, you will find very little help or support from others, and constantly have

to deal with ridicule and intentional setbacks from others who do not want to see things change.

Give this scenario some thought. Figure out how this is relevant to the world we live in today?

Through the years, of the 1000s of people surveyed, all except one have responded that they would choose

option A. Only 1 person has chosen option B

Here’s the real reason why this thought experiment was created.

-Right now, nearly half of the children on our planet do not have food. Over 58% of malnourished children’s

death happens in India. Over 5,00,000 children die every year because of this. Terrorism does not kill even

1% of this. Accidents do not kill so many.

-50% of the world lives on less than Rs. 150/- a day.

-80% of the world live on less than Rs. 40- a day.

You, who is reading this must be…..

- Literate.

-Have food and water.

-Has shelter.

-Has electricity.

-Has enough clothes

-Has the time, money, and energy to lift people out of poverty.

We are the top 10% of people who made it up the mountain.

There are many people out there who desperately need our help. In a simplified hypothetical thought

experiment, every one of us is risking our lives and volunteering to lift people. Lets actually live up to these

ideals in real life. Lets summon the courage to look outside of our social life to do what we know deep down is

right.

If we are not doing these things, who will? If we are not doing what we CAN, those 90 people below the

mountain have no chance, whatsoever.

Do have the courage to answer real questions we each need to ask ourselves – Are we doing enough for the

90 people? If the answer is yes, please share and inspire us. If the answer is no, then ‘Why not?’.

This experiment changed my life. I am sure it must have done the same with you too.

Declaration — This LSM is an adapted version of what I had read some while ago, somewhere…
