  • 1. TEXTUAL ANALYSIS What I Have Learnt So Far By Harry Butler

2. What is Textual Analysis?Textual analysis is, a way of analysing certain images orvideos to understand the story or point that thedirector or artist is trying to show his/her viewer.A way of doing this is looking at the detail by using threesections:1) Analysing the context of the video. Who is theintended audience?2) Analysing the Textual Features. Is there a conceptto the video?3) Placing the text in a new context. How can youinterpret this music video to make it your own? 3. Andrew GoodwinGoodwin was one of our research resources into our music video ideas and how to create it to be the best we can make it. Goodwin had a number of techniques to show this and to help creativity in artists performance. 4. How to analyse Music videosAndrew Goodwin had a theory that showed 5 keyaspects of a music video that an audience shouldlook out for:1) Thought beats seeing the sound2) Narrative and Performance3) The star Image4) Relation of visuals and song5) Technical aspects of the song/video Each of these points are key in a music videoand to this modern day Andrew Goodwinstheory is still used by professional artists. 5. Analysing genre typesAs a group we werent initially sure what genre of music videos we should use as we wanted to make it easy for ourselves. Therefore, we decided to analyse the genre of music we liked. Hip hop and R&B. We found out that these are very hard genres to try and interpret and rock/Indie music is easier to do as it can be random and doesnt have to have a concept to it. The following slides show my Textual analysis of Music videos and shows the final conclusion into the thinking and research for the music video we chose. 6. Essay 1 Toddla T take it backThe first essay was actually an initial idea of to what genre of music wewanted to do; it was also a choice as to which we considered to be thesong choice for our music video. Toddla T genre is a hip hop/dancebased artist. However, we learnt that creating these videos can bedifficult and only has a small target audience of age ranges between 16-25. From analysing the music video we learnt that the lyrics in thevideo have a positive relationship towards the visuals and also helpsback up the genre of the music. The Video is based in an estate anddue to the loud music playing from the estate house it brings morepeople and creates a party scene which is ironic due to the genre of themusic. Furthermore, this is also shown between the relationship of themusic and the visuals. This also helped me notice that AndrewGoodwins theory was true and gave us as a group a few more ideas asin to what ideas we could use for our music video. However, the videoshowed only small clips of the main character and this gave us the ideathat in some music videos actors are not needed and music videos canbe used through images. Therefore, we analysed a few more videosbefore we came to our conclusion. 7. Essay 2 Chris Brown With YouChris Brown is a young well known artist from America and his preferenceis in R&B and hip hop. Analysing a variety of genres helped usunderstand target audiences and again gave us more ideas into thecreation of our video. This music video was shot in Los Angles and wasa song about love. Analysing the textual contexts of this video was hardand would therefore, be hard to create and it also again has a smalltarget audience ranging between 16-25. However, unique ideas usedby Chris through Goodwins theory was interesting and helped usunderstand the video more. From learning about Chriss history he is atalented artist and would be very hard to try and copy successfullyespecially with the nature of the song. Therefore, as a group wedecided to use Indie rock as our choice of genre, we started by lookingat the video by The Kooks she moves in her own way. 8. Essay 3 The kooks she moves inher own wayThe Kooks have a different vibe to Toddla T and Chris Brown and are a anEnglish indie rock band from Brighton. The idea of using this genre waspositive because we knew the target audience was much wider andthere were a lot more ideas we could use to create this music video.Furthermore, the band had more recognition in making music forexample the song Naive. Using Goodwins theory also helped usbecause we saw a lot of the main characters but in a general way, themain characters werent always performing. This gave us a cue as towhat we wanted to now do in our music video. Analysing this videobecame easier when having many ideas as to the sort of camera shotsthat they used and the clothing that they wore identified them. However, not the whole of the video made sense and was hard tounderstand, this is what made it unique. Analysing different musicvideos has made it easier for us to understand different genres of musicand gave us some ideas for our song choice of Torn on the Platformby Jack Penate.
