Texas Tech: A School Rich in History Texas Tech is a University rich in cultural history and

school pride. A brief look into their history helps you

understand why so many people want to become a Red

Raider.

In the Labs In 2008, Texas Tech’s research labs combined with

Harvard University to work out the possibility of using

siRNA to counteract the degenerative effects of HIV

(human immunodeficiency virus). siRNA is known as

short interfering RNA or silencing RNA.

It’s known for its ability to silence, or interfere with, the expression of specific genes. Applied to HIV, it

could possibly interfere with the negative expressions of the virus, essentially curing it by stopping it

from working.

When you take the electricity out of a computer, how well does it function? They found the process to

be effective in rats and the public awaits the refined research results for humans.

Fighting for a Healthy World Similar important studies are always underway at Texas Tech. Dr. Ruth Perez is currently working to

understand the normal function of key proteins that are instrumental in the creation of brain disorders.

When she figures that out, she can start working

on the ways to make sure these proteins go right,

removing some of the common brain disorders

people suffer from today. The question is no

longer if they can do it, the question is what will

they discover next?

Training Some of the Best On an entertaining level, Texas Tech has had a lot

to talk about in terms of their sports in recent

years. Most especially, their football program has

been something to cheer for in an already

football fanatic area.

Over the years, they have produced 5 players that were inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Donny Anderson later played for both Green Bay and St. Louis back in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

E. J. Holub played for the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs throughout the 60’s. Gabriel Rivera, the

fastest defensive tackle coming out of college, went on to play for the Steelers for a year before

becoming paralyzed in an accident.

Heralded as one of their greatest football players by the director of athletics, Dave Perks, an effective

wide receiver, enjoyed a career with the 49ers, Saints,

and Houston Oilers from ’64 to ’73. Hub Bechtol, the

first of the five, was a wide receiver that played for the

Steelers and Baltimore Colts in the late 40s.

Many of their more recent players are found scattered

throughout the NFL. The school itself has several

conference championships to its name.

Other Great Achievements Their other sports have represented their school as well.

Their women’s basketball team claimed the national

title back in 1993 and the men’s team continually appears in the NCAA tournament.

From advancing in science to working through the NCAA tournament during March Madness, Texas Tech

has a notable history. That history will only propel the University to a successful future.
