CHARECTERISTICS OF GONDWANA COAL

1. In India about 98% of coal produced from Gondwana coal fields & coal seams are associated with sandstones.

2. Most of the Gondwana coals are of bituminous type.3. Mostly black in colour &carbon is more than 70%.4. In India 80 out of 113 coal fields are of Gondwana coal.5. Almost free from moisture and contains small amount of sulphur.6. Volatile and ash content is about 13-30%.7. Most of them are noncoking(except jharia, bokaro, giridh).

CHARECTERISTICS OF TERTIARY COAL

1. In India about only 2% of coal are produced from tertiary coal fields & these are of lignite type.

2. Very low carbon(30-50%) & brown in colour.3. High sulphur contain & very less amount of gold.4. Coal seams of NE are highly folded hence difficult to mine.5. Coal seams are associated with limestone & slates.6. 90% of the tertiary coal are in Ney valley.
