Student engagement by participation

▸ Class participation tools can facilitate student engagement with each other, the subject content and the lecturer.

▸ They enable students to interact in large lectures by answering questions, leading to an improved understanding of the content.

Page 3: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Why use these tools…?

▸ They give the student a voice and an opportunity to share their opinions and contribute to the session – ideal for those quieter students who are not often heard in large teaching spaces.

▸ They can be used to get feedback on your own teaching.

▸ They could be used for mid-module evaluations.

The aims of this workshop…

▸ We are going to look at some participation tools that you could use at York St John University.

▸ Each of them have their pros and cons, so it’s important that you select the correct tool for the job.

Padlet

Padlet

▸ Padlet is like an online noticeboard where participants can express their own thoughts and views by adding a note (a bit like online post-it notes).

▸ Once a board is set up it is accessed through a unique link.

▸ Students can add content (images, videos, links, text) anywhere on the screen, from any device.

Page 8: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Padlet

▸ Padlet (like Textwall) can also be used as a backchannel in lectures, for students to post questions about the lecture you are delivering.

▸ It could be used before a lecture to determine prior knowledge or understanding.

▸ It could be used for a brainstorming exercise.

▸ Learning from within a session could easily be extended to outside the classroom.

Page 9: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Padlet

▸ Enables and aids collaborative group work within lectures.

▸ Students find it difficult to use on a mobile device on a small screen.

Kahoot

Kahoot

▸ A Kahoot is a collection of questions on specific topics. They are asked in real-time, to an unlimited number of “players”, creating a social, fun and game-like learning environment.

Page 12: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Kahoot

▸ There is no limit to the number of questions you can add to a quiz.

▸ Each question can have an associated picture or video (although this is not a requirement) and 2 - 4 multiple choice answers. There must be at least one correct answer (but more can be chosen).

▸ The time-limit for each question can be individually set from 5 seconds to 2 minutes.

Kahoot

▸ They can engage and focus the students, and be used to formatively assess the knowledge of each individual in the room. They can be used to track progress of individuals over time, and inspire learners to enquire further by creating their own quizzes.

▸ Players answer questions displayed at the front of the room on their personal device.

Kahoot

▸ The faster someone answers a question correctly, the more points they get. The top 5 highest points scorers are displayed on the leader board in-between each question, and the winner is shown at the end.

▸ Results, including who answered what for each question, can be downloaded afterwards.

Kahoot

▸ Engages students and an easy way to carry out formative assessment

▸ Students can use inappropriate/silly nicknames

Nearpod

Nearpod

▸ Nearpod is an application that enables tutors to create interactive teaching resources that can be accessed by students on laptops and mobile devices (iOS and Android).

▸ Tutors can monitor and measure students’ responses to interactions such as quizzes and polls that are part of the resource.

Page 18: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Nearpod

▸ It enables tutors to share content with their students and manage the flow of the lecture.

Page 19: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Nearpod▸ Great, if you want

your students to follow and interact with the lecture content on their own device.

▸ Not all students will have access to a mobile/tablet device

Socrative

Page 21: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Socrative

▸ Socrative is a student response system/quiz engine that runs on multiple devices; smartphones, tablets and laptops.

▸ It’s a great tool for encouraging student participation in lectures and formative assessment opportunities.

Page 22: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Socrative

▸ Socrative enables tutors to deploy real time quizzes and questions in lecture theatres and classrooms.

▸ Tutors are able to create multiple choice, true/false and short open-ended questions.

▸ Once a quiz is complete the tutor can access and export a report of the results.

Page 23: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Socrative

▸ Excellent for those moment of need formative assessment opportunities

▸ Requires students to download an app to respond to questions

Textwall

Page 25: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Textwall

▸ Textwall is a simple tool which allows learners to send messages to a virtual wall via SMS, email or an online web form.

▸ It promotes participation in large lectures, gathering student feedback and getting an impression of a student’s knowledge or opinions.

Page 26: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Textwall

▸ A Textwall allows you to set a question that learners can respond to.

▸ For example you could use it in the background with students posting questions to it about the lecture you’re delivering. Then at regular points in the lecture, you can refer to the Textwall and clarify any information the students are commenting about.

Page 27: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Textwall

▸ Each Textwall has unique code (the Technology Enhanced Learning team Textwall code is TEL) – this ensures that messages posted get displayed on the correct walls. When responding to the wall, participants must start their message with the unique code.

▸ As well as receiving SMS, email and web messages you can configure the Textwall to pull in tweets based on particular hashtag.

▸ All messages posted to the wall will appear in real time.

Page 28: TEL me about... Student Engagement

Textwall

▸ Excellent running in the background in lectures or for gathering student feedback on a session/module.

▸ Occasionally you will get a student who sends a spam response or jokes to the Textwall.

▸ You are limited to asking one question at a time.
