XIV. Is it Destroying the Language?
What is Happening?
• English on the Internet
and in the mobile
world has changed.
• Text lingo and net
lingo have been
flourishing.
• People fear that text
and net lingo has
been interfering with
modern English.
With the lives of Americans
having sped up, language
has been shortened to
follow the fast-pacing.
What are These Newfangled
Tech?
• Social Networking: an online service, platform, or site that focuses on facilitating the building of social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections.
Examples:
Google+
Orkut
MyYearBook
Tagged
MySpace
• Text Messaging: Text
messaging, or texting,
refers to the
exchange of brief
written text messages
between two or more
mobile phones or
fixed or portable
devices over a phone
network.
Features:
160 Character Limit
Speedy Receive and Send
Cheap
QWERTY Keyboard
• Instant Messaging
(IM): a form of
communication over
the Internet, that
offers an
instantaneous
transmission of text-
based messages from
sender to receiver.
Examples:
AIM
Yahoo IM
MSN Live Messenger
Meebo
Trillian
Pidgin
Is Texting and Social-
Networking a Form of Writing
or Speech?
• Characteristics of
texting and social
networking:
• Sentences are well-
thought before sent.
• Contains some
manner of speech
characteristics.
• Requires formulating
words using a
medium, i.e. tech.
These forms of
communication are closer
to writing than to speech. It
can borderline with creative
writing, where an obvious
tone is set and is less formal
than academic writing.
Positive: Encouragement
• More students are
encouraged
everyday to write
• Most school-aged
children wrote more
than their parents.
• Many children can
separate formal
writing from informal
writing.
Positive impacts mostly
occur when a student
writes. They are capable of
improving their own quality
of writing as they write down
their own thoughts and
feelings in order to publicize
them.
Positive: Speed• Accomplish More
• Suits Busy Lives
Speed is important in the
average American’s life.
Without speed, not much
can be accomplished. With
technology, people can
send quick messages and
type faster, saving time for
them.
Positive: Reading
• Several sites offer visual and sound accompaniments, enabling children to maintain interest and learn more.
• Important literacy skills like critical thinking and reading comprehension are gained through surfing the web.
Plenty of well-written works
lie on the internet. They can
influence readers, especially
children, and teach them
skills that are needed for
decent literacy.
Positive: Thought
• Word Processors are
faster.
• People can let the
words flow easily onto
a monitor before
going back to edit.
With programs such as
Microsoft Word, people can
write a train of thought,
having less disruptions than
when writing on paper.
Negative: Formality
• Language has grown
less formal in terms of
both content and
syntax.
• Text speak and
Netspeak has
downgraded the
English language into
acronyms and broken
sentences.
There has been a decline in
formality in the past 50
years. Casual wear exists
often in the workplace, and
greetings are simply by first
name, no matter by whom.
This also applies to
language.
Negative: Youth
• Businesses are attempting to appeal to youth with slang, Netspeak, and texting lingo.
• Role-models are diminishing, as middle-aged adults are growing obsessed with youth, and thus follow the language culture involved with younger generations.
Youth are important for any
country, as they lead the
country’s future. They are
also highly influenced. With
America obsessed with
youth, language has taken
a spin away from
sophistication.
Negative: Constant Changes
• Changes sometimes
happen faster than
people can
comprehend.
• People have
misinterpreted
meanings due to this.
Connotations in words are
changed in the cybernetic
and mobile phone worlds
everyday. This also applies
to acronyms.
Negative: Negligence of
Grammar
• Some word classes
have been eliminated
in chats in the
technological world.
• As long as the point is
across, not many
people care to use
grammar.
Grammar has been
neglected, and it has been
showing up onto papers.
Negative: Education
• More and more people believe that education does not necessarily lead to financial success. This leads to laziness.
• FCATs have shown a shocking decrease in writing scores, even with the changes in the scoring and difficulty.
Writing scores have been
impacted. Teachers have
found errors related to
Netspeak in essays and
reports.
Negative: Weaker Interpersonal Relationships
• People multitasking is highly common.
• Focus is split when people are doing more things at once.
• With communication, if people converse with more than one person through different mediums, sentences and thought degrades.
People are less connected
with each other more than
ever today, despite all of
the connectivity provided
by tech. This does influence
language.
So is it Destroying the
Language?
• People are abusing texting and other communication tools.
• People are growing lethargic with the language.
• It is certainly degrading diverse and aesthetic properties of English.
• As long as some people cling to “proper” English, corruption will not happen anytime soon.
It is not destroying the
language, but it is
degrading it. Context is
shallow and simple, and it is
appearing in more places.
