Hello and Welcome to Mrs. Jernigan’s Class

During this presentation, you will discover how I apply the following things in my classroom:

*How I apply Bloom’s Taxonomy with Thinking Skills

When your child first enters First Grade, I take the first few weeks to allow them to recall whatthey learned in kindergarten. This time ofreflection is beneficial because some childrenforget this information during the summer.

According to Bloom’s Taxonomy, once this is done, I start raising the level of difficulty withinmy teaching. The students will go from basicquestions to more complex questions over thecourse of the year.

Page 5: Technology powerpoint

What is Knowledge? The ability to remember previously

learned material.

Upon entering First Grade, my students are asked to recite their alphabets and sounds, write their alphabets, count to ten, write their names, name the vowels.

Page 6: Technology powerpoint

What is Comprehension?

The ability to grasp the meaning of material.

In my class, I give my students number words for ex. eight, ten, seven. The students will have to write the numbers for each word. (8), (10), (7). Doing this allows me to know if they comprehend when they see a number word, it correlates to a number.

Page 7: Technology powerpoint

What is Application? The ability to use learned material in new and

concrete situations.

During our lesson on safety, I put the students in 4 groups and eachgroup will be given a safety tip. 1.Always look both ways before crossing the street. 2.Never talk to strangers. 3. Never touch needles or guns. 4. Always wear a helmet when riding your bike. The students will act out these situations. By dramatizingthese safety tips, the students are able to apply what they havelearned in class.

Page 8: Technology powerpoint

What is Analysis?

The ability to break down material into its component parts so that its organizational structure may be understood.

For example, during our lesson on the body, I take the heart and brain and the students analyze the relationship between the two and how we need them both to live.

Page 9: Technology powerpoint

What is Synthesis? The ability to put parts together to form a new whole.

During our lesson on fractions, the students are given a fraction puzzle and are asked to put the puzzle together. They are then asked to take away some of the puzzle pieces and determine what of the puzzle is missing.

Page 10: Technology powerpoint

What is Evaluation?

The ability to judge the value of material for a given purpose.

When evaluating my student’s work, I use a lot of rubrics for the students’ projects in class. This allows the students to know exactly what is expected of them and how to obtain their desired grade and it makes sure that their projects are done accurately and correctly.

What isBloom’s Revised Taxonomy?

Blooms’ Taxonomy is a critical element orguideline that should use when teachingWhich includes Recalling, Summarizing,Classifying, Organizing, and Recognizing.

Page 13: Technology powerpoint

Here are examples of how I apply Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy in my classroom

Recalling—The students will name the four seasons and draw a picture for each.

Summarizing—After I read a Read Aloud book, the students will tell me a synopsis of the story.

Classify—The students will group a list of animals as mammals or non mammals.

Organizining—The students will put the flash cards in abc order.

Recognizing—The students will be asked to touch the letter, dipthong or letter pattern that makes the correct sound at the beginning of the given words.

How do I apply Marzano’s Dimensions of Learning in my classroom? There are 5 dimensions of Marzano’s

Dimensionsof Learning which are:

1.Positive Attitudes and Perceptions Learning2. Acquisition and Integrating of Knowledge3.Extension and refinement of Knowledge4.Meaningful Use of Knowledge5.Productive Habits of Mind

Page 15: Technology powerpoint

Positive Attitudes and Perceptions Learning

I think that students learn best when they are comfortable and feel safe and secure in the classroom. It is very important for me to se my classroom rules, and make sure my students not only understands them but they also follow the rules in order to have a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.

Page 16: Technology powerpoint

Acquisition and Integration of KnowledgeWhen presenting my lessons, I often use a KWL

chart which allows the students to access prior knowledge by telling me what they already know about the topic (K). What they want to know allows me the students to collaborate an brainstorm ideas about what they want to learn about the topic (W). What the students learned is my opportunity to ensure that I have not only taught the lesson to fidelity but also answered all of their questions that my students had about the topic (L).

Page 17: Technology powerpoint

Extension and Refinement of Knowledge

It’s not only important for my students tounderstand a lesson, but also apply what theyhave learned to other subjects and lessons.during my class, I ask my students to use theirthinking skills such as, compare, classify, andanalyze things. Doing this keeps my students actively engaged and involved in their learningprocess.

Page 18: Technology powerpoint

Meaningful use of KnowledgeThe students had a science lesson where they took a seed and planted it and watched it grow. They had to make use of their prior knowledgethat had about plants in our previous sciencelessons in order to make sure the used thecorrect amount of water, and how muchsunlight the seed needed in order to grow. Thisexperiment was an example of the how thestudents were able to use meaningful knowledge toaccomplish their goal, it also engaged them in thedecision making process.

Page 19: Technology powerpoint

Productive Habits of Mind

This last dimension is a very critical part of thestudents learning process. It is very importantfor my students to use their critical and creativethinking skills which they will be required to useall year in first grade while they are in my class. This will also help them continue on in their education.

◦When we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work and when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings.”

Wendell Berry

Page 23: Technology powerpoint

These 16 Habits of Mind are only an indication of how we as human beings express our intelligence. The habits that impressed me the most and what I see the most in my classroom and explained within these next slides.

Page 24: Technology powerpoint

Persisting—In the 7 years that I have been teaching First Grade, I have had a lot of persistent students who would not give up until they had every answer right and who would even cry if they got it wrong. Other students were not so persistent and instantly say that they do not understand even before they looked at it. I always encourage my students to try and use previous taught skills that they have learned in order to complete the assignment.

Listening to others with understanding and empathy --- Many times when going over a lesson, I may ask a student a question and though its taking that child awhile to answer because he is taking time to process the questions, other students immediately raise their hand to answer. I teach ‘wait time’ in my class to allow every child to listen to the question, process it and then respond.

Page 25: Technology powerpoint

Striving for Accuracy and Precision---Someof my students when given an assignment, rush through it and finishes within 2 or 3minutes after they receive it in order to go toa center or get the next assignment. I stress to my students the importance oftaking their time when completingassignments and also taking pride in theirwork and to not turn in sloppy because theyare going to get it back and make it neat.

Page 26: Technology powerpoint

Thinking Interdependently---I encouragecooperative learning groups within my classroom. Thisallows the students the opportunity to collaborate andshare their ideas and it also helps the students withunderdeveloped social skills.

These Habits of Mind are not only confined to theclassroom but should be used in your child’s daily livesIn order to be effective students and citizens.

“TED” Conversations is an online webpage where students can discuss different topics with other kids around the world. I haven’t had the opportunity to introduce this to my students yet, but I am very excited about it. Please enjoy the following video!
