WELL WHAT IS THE ART?

Math is the art• Yes math is a form art • Many people now, and back in the day, thought long and hard for

answers to certain to problems• Yes some problems have been technical such as “Are there infinite

primes?”• Yet others were more fun, such as “Can you tile a chess broad, with

two of the corners of the same color missing, with a 2x1 domino?” (The Answer is no.)

• How did these question come up? • Further if this math what are children being taught at school?

THEN THE CHAOS IS . . .

The chaos is the way students are being taught math• Sadly math is the only subject to be taught without mention of:

history, philosophy, or even important dead people• Students are presented a lot of information, most of the time

without visual aid• Sadly math is reduce to memorization of tables and grids • This power point can only do so much, but . . . • At least I can mention the beauty of math

MATH TODAY

Unlike the famous dead guys, we now have technology• The use of technology is a boon as one can know see what is many

of the old school mathematicians were thinking• How many of use remember how to find the Area of the circle?

There may be a few that remember the archaic formula, Now how many know how to prove it? I do not think many of us know how.

• Sadly the method is so beautiful, all you have to do is cut the circle into slices like a pizza. Then you lay each slice next to one another making a square. Then you calculate the area of the that square. Easy right! Now let us move on . . . wait you do not understand?

NOW WE SEE THE PROBLEM

Let us try to understand the last problem • This is the way some teachers teach• Many of us are aware of the different intelligences, but how many people

address the other forms of teaching?• I know that many people did not understand what I said about the proof for

the area of a circle; I know this because I did not understand it in that form• How about I show a picture of what I mean about slices and the square• Is this better? Now one can see the what I mean • What if I asked to make more slices could this look morelike a square? What not play with it, go to this website http://www.geogebratube.org/student/m111

SO WHY USE THESE SOURCES?

It would seem silly not to use the boon that computers give to the subject of math• I must admit that I am not a big fan of using technology, but when

something works it is best to find out how it can help make life easier

• Not all students learn the same, this includes EVERY student whether they are disabled or not

• I pray everyone was able to use the website, if you noticed the website allowed you to play with the area of the circle

• This makes the concept less abstract and more relative to a student• Let us take this power point for example, it is: Colorful, has

interactive components, and lasting questions and it all has to do with math

NOW LET US SEE A LESSON

I have mentioned the use of technology now let us see it in action• Suppose one wants to teach factions, more specifically adding them • Let us use the example to the bottom right• A teacher can say, “What is the common denominator of 3 and 4?” • A few students will know that means, yet not every student

understands the math jargon being used• How else can we address this issue?• I was able to make a video of this exact lesson• I used colors to represent the numbers• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnsGvltRl5o• Take a look

Page 8: Technology in the class

WELL WHAT DO WE DO NOW?

What was the main idea of this power point?• Was I trying to show you the art that is math?• Or the fact that math can be taught with the use technology?• I pray that both were shown in the this power point• Just like any one of us would much rather be involved than be seated

in a classroom, students are the same• The videos and websites are two of many examples that can be used

to reach different types of intelligences • Although I only did two lessons I was able to include technology in

both of them, further more this very presentation is using technology to get my point across

• I hope that the point is made math is art• Find a way to use technology to give students that visual aid• Thank you for you time!
