1. View from the other side: Teacher turns student Teacher
experience of online learning: reflections, evaluation and
reassessment
2. Introduction:Background to research
Increase in mandated use of e-learning 3. Expectation of
students that this will be available 4. Teaching professionals
within universities receive no or very little training in how
utilise these technologies effectively 5. Direct replication of
current practice online
6. Paradigm Shift and learned experience
Teachers can fall back on their own experience but many have no
experience of online learning.
If a tutor has no experience of online learning, does their
practice in their previously experienced paradigm translate to that
of an online context?
E-learning facilitates the move away from the understanding of
teacher as the holder of knowledge 7. Placing tutors into
unfamiliar concept and environment
8. Research Method
Small scale research project:
Qualitative methodology 9. Case study 10. PGCERT participants
were asked to participate in an online environment for the course
of a week 11. A focus group (n4) was conducted with the
participants a few days after their experience
12. Results: 1. Skills
Practical: Exploration of the tools and developing
understanding. (Primary objective) 13. Evaluative: Development of
evaluative frameworks for tools 14. Appropriate application:
Questioning the application of technology andhowit can support and
enhance student learning.
15. Results 2: Identity and roles
Appreciation of the importance of online identity when engaging
in e-learning activities 16. Evaluation of the projection of self
to others 17. Emotional empathy- the sociolcultural context of
learning
Implications on design 18. Expectations of engagement and
comfort 19. Instruction
20. Conclusions
Transformative experience? 21. greater awareness of the
implications and limitations of this paradigm
possibilitiesand affordances 22. critical evaluation 23.
awareness of the practicalities and difficulties
