Bauer Media should choose to produce my magazine because it is fills a gap in the market of a magazine that combines three genres and sends the young target audience positive messages about people and things (i.e. consensual sex).

My magazine has a range of topics that appeal to my target audience and will occupy young people who might otherwise be distressing the neighbours and being involved in criminal activity. This is because the content of my magazine encourage young people to get into the community and do things e.g. reviews of festivals, articles about good (arty) books and clothing sales. All these things enourage young people to get involved and the magazine will have a large audience involvement – fans are encouraged to write reviews, articles, letters and stories for the magazine. There will be heathly competitions for the best magazine cover made and the best review and the best story, the winners will receive prizes of CD’s and concert tickets.

The target audience of my magazine is young adult males aged between 15-30 years old and in class ABC1. They enjoy browsing the internet, music, clothing, books, writing, television and film.

I will appeal to my target audience by relating these subjects to articles in my music magazine and also the artists – for example – if an artist (commonly featured in my magazine or related to the genre and that my target audience may like) were to have written a book then I will write an article about it because my target audience like this artist and also like reading books, so will like to know about this. Some of the artists I will have in my music magazine are: My Chemical Romance, Blur, Panic! At the Disco, Fun. and Arctic Monkeys. To further appeal to my target audience I will use words like: Retro, vintage, mainstream, unique, and indie.

- Slightly sexual- This first mode of address I have chosen

to use appeals to the target audience because sex is appealing to males ages 15-30 as they have been introduced to it and it is quite a large part of society (advertising etc). They are young so they are learning about themselves and sex.

- Inviting- This mode of address is appealing

to the target audience because the audience are polite and feel they should be invited in before they can stay – also, young people are more likely to take something if they have been invited to – as well as this, it builds up the idea of consensual sex as they can’t do it unless they’ve been “invited” to

- Humorous- Humour is appealing to the target

audience because people like to laugh and the magazine should seem fun and exciting to the target audience

- Serif font for the masthead- Serif font for the cover story artist’s name- Black, red, purple and white colours- A faded grey will be the background of the pages (like

this background)- This house style is appealing to the target audience

because these colours are associated to the genre and reinforce the modes of address (slightly sexual – red, serif font; inviting – purple, black, serif font; humour – purple, red, black and grey).

- This house style is also appealing to the target audience because the serif font connotes creativity and allows the audience to become familiar with the style of the magazine and to be able to recognise it easily

- The genre I have chosen is Indie (with elements of rock and common pop)

- This genre is appealing to my target audience because it contains aspects from everyday music. The common pop means they are familiar with the music, the rock allows them to be rebellious (they’re young, they’ll want to be rebellious at some point) and the main indie genre means they can be quirky and different and branch out in music a little more (perhaps signifying their growth as people as they get older).

- This genre will be conventionally represented through close-up, wide and long shots of artists wearing indie (and slightly rock associated) clothing. The artists will be represented through their body language and mise-en-scene as strong, powerful, sexual and inviting/welcoming.

For my first issue my magazine will contain:- An interview with a popular indie

(and slightly pop) artist- “Is digital download dominating

the music industry?” Article- An artists’ timeline of their music- Reviews of albums, gigs and

festivals- Cheap, affordable clothing

(designed by artists and fans)- Articles of some new artists on the

scene and how they got involved in music

- The layout of the cover will be conventional as the masthead will be at the top of the route of the eye (in the primary optical area) and also the coverlines will be conventionally in the left hand side of the cover.

- On the cover, the cover story will be in the middle of the page near the bottom of the page

- These conventions will appeal to the target audience because they are familiar to magazine buyers and so keeps the audience at ease and open-minded about the content of the magazine.

- The contents page will be conventional as the contents will be mainly on the left hand side of the page and the main image on the contents page will be on the right hand side of the page.

- These conventions are familiar which means the audience already know how to read a contents page and makes it easier for them to find what they want – because they are accustomed with this they are more likely to skim through the contents list

- The double page spreads will be conventionally appealing because the image (conventionally a wides shot) will be on the left side of the spread and the headline will be in the primary optical area of the left page.

- This is appealing to the target audience because the artist is seen more and reflects the fact that there is an article about the artist beside the image
