I intend to gather over fifty images. From the shoot, I will then select 10 final images that I believe would best suit the publication and my intended vision and style. Once I have edited them, they should be visually striking and attractive images which are fit for use in a music magazine, whilst being done to professional standards. Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others) My theme of images is generally going to be close-up intimate shots of the band. I selected this theme because it allows me to gain some good, quality shots which display the emotions of the band members. 1. Michael Williams (http://www.michaelwilliams.co.uk/music/ ) I like Michael Williams’ set of images as they have different backgrounds and different poses and positions for each of his subjects. I will try and use different backgrounds during my photography shoot and will also have my subjects in different stances and poses.

(P2, P3, M2, M3, D2, D3)

Candidate name:Daniel Hopkins

Theme: Music Magazine Portrait Photo Shoot

Predicted final outcome

For my assignment, I will be completing a portrait photography shoot for use in a music magazine. I intend to gather over fifty images. From the shoot, I will then select 10 final images that I believe would best suit the publication and my intended vision and style.Once I have edited them, they should be visually striking and attractive images which are fit for use in a music magazine, whilst being done to professional standards.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)

My theme of images is generally going to be close-up intimate shots of the band. I selected this theme because it allows me to gain some good, quality shots which display the emotions of the band members.

1. Michael Williams (http://www.michaelwilliams.co.uk/music/)I like Michael Williams’ set of images as they have different backgrounds and different poses and positions for each of his subjects. I will try and use different backgrounds during my photography shoot and will also have my subjects in different stances and poses.

2. Tom

Barnes (http://tombarnes.co/)

I like Tom Barnes’s work because he gets shots of his photograph subjects from different angles and with different, unique background. For example above an old apartment block and building on the left and a grey sky on the right. I will experiment with different angles and backgrounds during my shoot, as I think they provide good effects and compliment the subject in the photograph.

3. Marcus Maschwitz (http://www.marcusmaschwitz.co.uk/) I like Marcus Maschwitz’ work as he gets images of his subjects looking directly into the camera, which gives a connection and a sense of closeness to the viewer. I think that images like this would be appropriate for a music magazine. I will take images like this during my shoot, of both the band together and for some individual shots. I like the idea of the band looking directly into the camera and will try to do it as professionally as

possible.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why The camera I will be using is a Canon EOS 1100D. I will be using this camera because it is modern, a DSLR and an overall good quality digital camera. This is vital if I am to gather good, quality images. The lens will be 18-55 millimetres, which will give me a good distance for my images. I will be able to zoom in and out to gain a preferred framing for my images whilst still retaining a good quality. This camera gives me the ability to change the f/stop, aperture, ISO and shutter speed, which will increase my ability get quality photographs. I may also opt to use a tripod, if I believe I cannot maintain a steady balanced shot. However, it will only be used if I think that not doing so will affect the quality of the camera

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message

When framing the images, I will attempt to capture a portrait and will focus on the body and face of my photographic subjects. I will try to get various angles of the band members, to gain a more intimate, close up feel. Hopefully, I will be able to capture realistic, interesting portrait photographs.

I will also use techniques such as the rule of thirds, ISO and aperture. Rule of thirds grids will help me to make an aesthetically pleasing image that looks balanced and well organized. The ISO will help me adjust the camera’s sensitivity to light, which will be required if factors such as the weather affect the quality of the images (for example if it overcast and grey). An inside shoot may also be too light or dark and the ISO would thusly have to be changed. The aperture will help alter the depth of field of the images, which will most likely be required, as there will be many background elements such as walls and trees.

Location of shoot

The type of music magazine my images will be used for will be for indie-rock based publications. I will shoot my portrait photographs in different locations, as I want to be able to experiment with various backgrounds and photographic situation. More locations also allows for more types of photos. As it is an indie rock magazine I will attempt some experimentation shots, to match the theme of modern rock and the hipster-rocker culture. I intend to shoot some of my portrait photographs at a

woodland named ‘Three Sisters’. I will be able to get some interesting backdrops of greenery and other things that can be located in the area, such as bridges, ponds and brick benches.

I may also do a part of my shoot in college grounds, as there are a variety of places from where I could get some interesting shots. These include the indoor photo studio, the drama stage and other various locations in and outside the college. I may also use some props while in college to add an extra element to the photography shoot.

Risk and health and safety considerations

I will complete a risk assessment on a separate document.
