Theme: Music Magazine Portrait Photo Shoot

Predicted final outcome

After this portraiture photo shoot I aim to come out with 50 portrait images. After I have looked through these images I will choose 10 I think look up to the best standards. Hopefully my images will promote and portray the message.

The first two images are example of the type of portrait images I want aim for. The one on the left is an image of an artist stood against a brick wall and the shot is from the waist upwards. The image on the left is of another artist stood to the left with buildings in the background; the main focus of that image is the artist so you can see clearly depth of field has been used. These other two images are example of the music magazine NME front cover. The image on the left is of an artist looking directly at the camera, the image on the right is of an artist during one of his performances. These will influence me when I go out and capture images myself. I will be using the same, if not similar techniques that the photographer has used when taking these images.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

When taking my 50 images I will be using either a Nikon D3100 or a Canon 7D, these camera will ensure my digital still images will be up to high quality.Nikon D3100 – 14.2 megapixels Canon 7D - 18 megapixels – ISO 6400I will be using some equipment such as a tripod to ensure there if no unwanted movement that could cause my images to be below the standards I want / need.

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message

I will use different similar or the same techniques I use when taking my landscape images. I will be changing the settings manually. Shutter speed, ISO, F-stop and framing are the main settings. Shutter speed will depend if the focus

in the image is moving or not, also the brightness of the area I will be in at the time. The ISO setting will be adjusted last, this is used is all the other settings are perfect but the image needs to be slightly darker / brighter. F-stop is used mostly letting a certain amount of light through the lens; this also affects the depth of field within the image. The framing is important as it will depend what the main focus will be at the time and what we will see within the frame. There a different types of portrait pictures that I will try to involve when taking my images. For example I will be focusing on traditional, candid, environmental and lifestyle portraits. The angles of the picture and how I frame the subject in the image and the styles of portrait will also help convey the message in a different way.

Location of shoot

These images are example of the type of music magazine my photos would be used for. The images used for these magazines are usually clear studio backgrounds. The genre of music these magazines look for is hip hop / pop / R ‘n’ B. My photo shoot would probably take place in my house or outside as long as the background was clear. The images that are used for these magazines will influence what style of portrait images I want to take when I start my photo shoot.
