La Tarea: Telling Time
Ÿ Review (Repaso): "Que hora es?" means "What time is it?".
Ÿ To Respond to this question this is how you can answer:
Ÿ To tell the time at 1:00 use: Es la una. It is one./ It is one o' clock.
Ÿ To tell the time after 1:00 use: Son + las + ___(time)___ Ex: Son las tres. It is three./ It is three o' clock.
Ÿ Let' assume it is 5:24 PM and you need to translate this into Spanish. This is how you would say it:
Ejemplo: Cinco y veinte y cuatro.
Cinco refers to the hour. - The first word.
Y means "and". It includes the minutes that follow.
Viente y Cuatro refers to the amount of minutes stated.
Other Words to Know (Otras Palabras Sabes):
Y ... and / plus
Media... half / half past/ 30 minutes
Cuarto... quarter/ quarter past/ 15 minutes
(NOTE: Cuarto differs from cuatro which means "four". Cuarto can be interchanged with quince since they both translate to "15". )
Menos... minus
Minutos: minutes
horas: hours
Es la mediodia. It is 12 noon.
Es la medianoche. It is 12 midnight.
Por la noche. In/At the night.
Por la manana. In/At the morning.
Por la tarde. In/At the afternoon.
En punto. On the dot./On time./Precisely on time.
How do you say...? (Como se Dice...?)
Ÿ 9:45 PM
* One way to say this is: Nueve y cuarenta y cinco. But, this is not usually used in Spanish speaking countries.
*Another way to say this which is more common is: Diez menos cuarto.
This translates to 10 minus 15 minutes which is 9:45. Minutes can be subtracted from the higher hour to easy tell the time.
Ÿ 10:30 AM
* One way to say this is: Diez y media por la manana.
*Another way to say this is: Diez y treinta por la manana.
** BOTH ways are acceptable but note that one sentence uses media and the other sentence uses treinta. La Tarea To Assign for Next Class:TELLING TIME DITTO: ** Numeros 1-6 & E
