TAG QUESTIONS

A tag question is a short questions at the end of a statement. Tag questions show that:

The speaker is (almost) sure that the statement is true and does not expect an answer.

It’s hot today, isn’t it?

You don’t mind waiting, do you?

The speaker is not sure and expects an answer.

He works as a clerk, doesn’t he?

There aren’t any aliens, are there?

TAG QUESTIONS

Form.

• We form a tag question with the auxiliary verb or modal of the main clause and the appropriate subject pronoun.

He’s clever, isn’t he?

You have a degree, don’t you?

He can speak English, can he?

• When the sentence is affirmative, the tag question is negative.

She has invited everyone, hasn’t she?

• When the sentence is negative, the tag question is affirmative.

He didn’t show up, did he?

TAG QUESTIONS

• When the sentence contains a word with a negative meaning, like never, hardly, seldom, or rarely, the tag question is affirmative.

You never listen what I say, do you?

• When the verb of the sentence is in the simple present, we form the tag question with the auxiliary verb do / does and the subject pronoun. When the verb is in the simple past, we form the tag question with the auxiliary verb did and the subject pronoun.

The children don’t like fish, do they?

They won the game, didn’t they?
