Synthetic Cubism Paper Landscape Sculptures
Synthetic Cubism
• Emphasis on collage– Usually large pieces of neutral, colored, or printed
paper collaged to look like a specific object– These were called “papiers collés” (collages)– Even included fragments and signs from actual
objects (newspaper, playing cards, advertisements)
– Synthetic Cubism inspired Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden (Harlem Renaissance)
Assignment
• Although landscapes were rare in Cubism, they were the subject of paintings every now and then.
• Design a landscape of your choosing and reduce it to the simplest geometric shapes.
• You will use shallow depth to create a series of backgrounds, middle grounds, and foregrounds that illustrate a scene.
• Cubism was all about having shallow depth or none at all, so the background-middle ground-foreground won’t be too far away from each other.

Assignment Continued
• The best way to go about this project is to design your landscape entirely in your sketchbook, using full color, to begin.
