The semiotics that Diana Agrest and Mario Gandelsonas used in this book is a tool to break the
ideology and create new theory which apply in many other field and not only in architecture. In our
case, the ideology is a basic rule for people to follow but sometimes it may become a restriction. For
an example, people always know that a wall is a vertical wall instead of curvy, window and door is
always a rectangle shaped but it may not apply in every place. If the space is not suitable for the
ideology, then people have to create a new shape to fit in the specific situation. This method will go
through the 5 steps which mention in the book: Ideology, Arbitrary, Value, Sign and Theory. People
is always encourage to think out of the box and break the norm to solve the problem.
In a nutshell, there is always a challenge to break the "ideology" but what we can gain from it is an
improvising and new version of theory. The new theory created will against and replace the old
ideology and become the mass believe of people by time passed. Although the new theory become
an ideology but it is still in a cycle of creating new theory because the era is keep changing and the
