All sections of the UK Construction Industry should follow a set of official British Standards for symbols and hatching: BS 1192.

Symbols are a simplified representation of an item (eg a run of stairs).

Hatching is a term given to the markings that indicate the type of material that something is constructed from (eg stone, plywood).

Symbols usually appear on floor plans; hatchings usually appear on sectional drawings.
