Colegio Beato Carlos Mnauel Rodriguez English Through Drama Mrs. Rivera Syllabus This class is designed to help students improve their listening, speaking and vocabulary skills through the exciting, energetic, creative medium of drama. The course is designed around three broad topics, storytelling, reader’s theatre, and excerpts from plays. Within each topic there will be listening, speaking and improvisational activities. Activities designed to improve oral intelligibility as well as activities focusing on presentation skills and performance skills . As a final outcome, the class will work together on a final performance. Linguistic Objectives 1-Listening. Students will be able to: a-Understand natural speech including reductions and contractions b-Understand speaker’s tone ( e.g. attitude and emotional content) c-Understand the basic content (main idea and some details) of stories, plays, personal narratives d-Be able to follow the thread of a story or play e-Be able to develop an improvisational activity from oral instruction 2-Speaking. Students will be able to: a-Summarize, paraphrase, and recall in detail information heard or read b-Present or report information that is heard or read c-Improve ability to communicate when exact vocabulary is unknown d-Give explanations and express ideas and opinions e-Improve fluency, accuracy, and effectiveness in conversations and discussions with people of other cultures f-Gain skill and comfort in speaking and performing in front of groups 3-Pronunciation and Oral Intelligibility. Students will be able to: a-Pronounce the sounds of English in a clear and intelligible manner (e.g. vowels, consonants, clusters, word endings, and number of syllables) b-Correct stress within words and sentences c-Produce correct patterns of rhythm and intonation in statements and questions d-Improve ability to use linking blending and reductions After successfully completing this course, motivated and dedicated students will:

*Increase confidence in speaking English including speaking in front of groups *Gain an appreciation for stories and plays written in English *Be able to learn and tell stories more easily *Increase ability to tell stories spontaneously *Improve ability to “think on one’s feet” in English *Gain skills working successfully in groups to complete a project

EvaluationIn this class you will be evaluated according your performance on the following:

*Class participation: This is a major portion of your grade. It is vital that you participate fully and with enthusiasm in this class. This includes being in class, on time and taking an active part in all class activities. In order to get an “A” you must do excellent work .
