WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?

As part of my research for my short film, I made a survey asking abut film noir and what they would like and expect in my short film. I shared my questionnaire on social media and got a range of responses from people of different ages which helped because I can make my short film to people of a variety of ages.

The purpose of this question is to get an idea of what age group was the most popular at taking the questionnaire and which audience we can appeal to most. From the image on the left, we can see that the most popular age group is 15-20 year olds. I can look a individual responses too to find out specifically what people in these age groups see and expect.

Looking at the data from this question, it seems that more females took my survey than males. Only 8 out of the 48 people that took my survey were males. This could mean that more women are interested in taking a survey about Film Noir.

Not a lot of people have heard of film noir so the rest of the questionnaire will help me gather information about what genres the respondents like. Also by looking at individual responses, more females knew what Film Noir was. However this could be because more females took the survey than males.

For question 4, I asked a question requires the person to write a short written response. I wanted to know what the people who said that they have heard of film noir thought it was. Most people put answers like “black and white film” and “crime film.” The responders have a basic understanding of what it is.

I thought a question like this is important to ask. I want people to be drawn to my film and I want to know which is the best way to go with the film, in colour or black and white. A film like The Black Dahlia (2005) did well for a Film Noir film in colour.

5Like the question asking what Film Noir is, I asked people who said they liked black and white films what draws them to then to those style of films. This one however, was multiple choice with one option where they could write a response.

The reason why I chose to ask this question is because I wanted to know what people associated with black and white films. The most popular responses was “slapstick comedy” and “silent film.” Slapstick comedy was popular in the 19th century and early 20th century. Silent film in Film Noir can be German expressionism.

The point of this question is to know what the audience like to watch and to make a storyline based on the genre. A lot of people like the genres romance and adventure so that a can be a starting point when I think more about the plot for my short film.

If I want people to like my film, I need to know what people look for in a film. I want my film for the beginning to end to be of a high standard so I wanted to know what ending to a film to people prefer to see. Most people prefer a happy ending but a very close second was a cliffhanger. Only one person said they prefer a sad ending.

I found that this question was very important to ask because I want my short film to appeal to my audience. If people like to see new things, I can do a stereotypical film noir style film. If people don’t than I can add some features in the film that people are familiar but in the style of film noir.
