Survey Results

By analysing the results from my Survey Monkey I can discover the needs and wants of my target audience. Which in turn will help me decide on an appropriate storyline; as I should be able to gather what's most important to audience for when making my own media products.

The most prominent age range that took my survey is 16-18 years old. This is helpful as I am too that age, and will be able to use my own knowledge as well as additional feedback from friends in order to tailor my media products.

By establishing information about my target audiences habits when it regards my chosen film genre, I am able to realise the importance of their opinions. The majority (35%) watch a horror film once a month, this regular exposure means they are not only well informed on the keys to making a successful film but can also help critic mine during the development process.

Although asking open ended questions during a survey can give you more detailed feedback, to condense 20 peoples varying opinion proves very difficult. Nearly all responses were different. Despite not being able to use this particular question for a clear direction on my project, it has in turn helped me realise the huge range of horror films on the market and therefore the importance of creating a unique storyline.

Paranormal gained the highest response, which in turn as a producer of a trailer using this result will be helpful. This genre relies heavily on clever camera work and editing to induce fear, therefore for someone like me who has little budget and special effect equipment, this category will still allow me to create a professional looking trailer.

Dolls came out on top for most scary antagonist, however using the second choice of a ghost/spirit may be more appropriate for my project. This is because spirits do not have to be shown on camera. By filming in certain ways you can create the idea of one being there and at the same time create a fear element of the unknown.

Clearly a house is the most popular setting for a horror film and unlike a woods it will allow the story to be told more easily, due to the ability of using different rooms and household props etc. A way of incorporating the responses that chose the ‘woods’ or ‘abandoned buildings’ would be making sure the house used is in a remote location. Therefore it will connote a similar isolated and helpless feeling when setting the scene.

When questions don’t produce a clear answer it shows this aspect of the film isn't imperative to its success. Therefore I have the choice in regards to both these questions, knowing that either way at least 50% of my target audience will approve of my decision.

The fear of murders is significantly the highest response with 47% this means that violence and blood should play a large role within the storyline. Possession came a close second choice with 27% this relies on clever acting skills in order to be portrayed, and would work well with the murder aspect that’s clearly so crucially needed.
