Audience Questionnaire

The majority of people who took

part in the questionnaire are

aged 15-18 and only one person

was aged 19-25 so this

questionnaire will mostly be the

opinion of older teenagers and

young adults.

When asked about

gender, there were

more males than

females in a 5:11 ratio

// 31.25% Female to

68.75% Male

This information is

useful for determining

the target demographic

as the majority of the

answers will be from a

male perspective. This

does not mean I should

disregard the female

perspective as it is

important to find out

what appeals to

everyone, helping me

narrow down the target

audience for our film.

In total only 4 out of 16

people do not watch

gangster films. This

allows us to see just

what people expect to

see in gangster films so

that we can incorporate

scenes and aspects

that will appeal to the

audience.

I colour coded the responses

to find out the most symbols

of identification for gangster

films. It seems that guns,

Italian mobs/mafia are most

commonly associated with

gangster films. Fighting and

violence came after weapons

and have inspired me to

include different shots that

depict this. I will also use The

Godfather and Scarface for

reference despite our theme

being culturally different. The

results have also contributed

to my existing knowledge of

mise-en-scene for gangster

films; for instance tattoos

were brought up.

Red: Guns

Blue: Mob/Mafia

Green: Italian Culture

Most used social media is

Facebook, followed by

Tumblr and then Twitter.

Among the responses the

majority stated Instagram as

their most often used social

networking website.

There was a range of

gangster films that

people favoured but The

Godfather was

mentioned twice so it is

the most favoured

gangster film amongst

the group.

One person also

mentioned a foreign film:

‘Eastern Promises’

The majority stated that the trailer makes them

want to watch a film. They described them as

“good” “eye popping” and “gripping”. By “good” I

assume they mean a trailer that reveals a good

plot but leaves you wanting more as some of them

explained. I gathered that they would like a trailer

that engages them visually and mentally.

The storyline is an

important element in

encouraging the audience

to go see the film;

ambiguity within the trailer

entice the audience even

further.

When asked about their hobbies, many people

expressed their enjoyment for sports like

basketball and dancing. Media consumption like

gaming, watching TV series and listening to

music are also common hobbies of the target

audience. Very few people stated reading as

one of their hobbies which indicates the

audience would rather be engaged visually.

According to the audience, the

Rap genre is most associated

with Gangster films. Possibly

because of the lyrical content

which often reflects violence and

crime. Secondly, Hip Hop and

thirdly RnB which are all sub-

genres of RnB.

Heavy metal and pop appear to

be the least associated genre

with Gangster films so it will not

be used in the making of our film.

Another person suggested

intense orchestra as one of the

genres they expect to hear in a

Gangster film.

The final question examines peoples

opinions of aspects that make the film

enjoyable for them. Good acting plays a

large part in making the film seem

authentic as possible so the audience

can become engrossed in the story.

When combined with an interesting plot

that eventually leads to a tremendous

climax the audience is able to

thoroughly enjoy themselves.
