Following a visit to Ty’n y Berth, as a student at a London school, I was catapulted from being a lost and despondent pupil into a young person who used adventure and outdoor experiences to fuel his education. Widehorizons provides inspirational outdoor learning experiences to over 32,000 young people every year. We use adventure to enhance a child’s education and to help them realise their own potential through developing communication skills, raising self-esteem and building their confidence. Our ability to transform lives can be seen in the case of Suresh Paul, whose discovery of adventure led him to have his own inspirational journey. Background Suresh Paul struggled immensely as a young man at school, suffering from severe communication problems; he found it difficult to relate to classroom-based learning. This left Suresh feeling frustrated, distant and doubting his ability to continue with his education. Suresh’s Widehorizons’ Journey During a trip to Widehorizons Ty’n y Berth centre on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park in Wales, Suresh was introduced to a new way of learning. Our team inspired Suresh to use the outdoors as a learning space through expeditions, adventure activities and tales of treks across far away mountains. Suresh realised that he didn’t need to be restricted by a purely classroom-based education. Gaining confidence and a new found self-belief from these insights and experiences, Suresh was able to use adventure to make positive changes in his life. Present Through his adventures with Widehorizons and understanding the difference it has made to his own life, Suresh wanted to make sure that other people should be given the same opportunities and has dedicated his career to ensuring access to adventure for people with disabilities. He has now founded his own specialist charity – Equal Adventure.
