The Liberal Arts and Sciencesstudent at SUNY Cobleskillwill never feel lost in animpersonal lecture hall withhundreds of other students.Our lectures generally haveonly 35-40 students. Regularclasses are even smaller,often with fewer than 20students. Our small class sizeand excellent student/facultyratio make our programsimilar to the experience ata small liberal arts college.

We offer a wide rangeof academic programs whichprepare students for futurestudies, graduate school, orthe work force.

Unlike larger universitieswhere assistants are oftenrelied on to teach, ourfaculty teach their ownclasses each and every day.Every major is founded onthe use of critical thinkingand a breadth of human

knowledge. This foundationallows the students in ourLiberal Arts and Sciencesprogram to easily transferto one of our professionalprograms or to anothercollege to continue theireducation. For students whohave excelled in high schoolor in their first semester atSUNY Cobleskill, the HonorsProgram offers even moreof an academic challenge.

SUNY Cobleskill beganin 1916 as the SchoharieSchool of Agriculture. Today,we offer one of the mostdiverse programs in theUnited States in agriculture,horticulture and naturalresources management.Our graduates are playingan increasingly importantrole developing new ways toutilize biotechnology, makingAmerican agriculture morecompetitive, and assuringa healthy food supply.

Our modern 650-acreagricultural complex servesas a laboratory for hands-onskill building where theoriescan be put into practice.It includes a working farm,14 greenhouses, a 10-acrearboretum, a 40,000-gallonfish hatchery, a 200-cowcontemporary freestall dairy,a meat laboratory, an equinecomplex with a new indoorarena, and a fully-equippedagricultural engineeringtechnology facility.

The Department ofAgricultural Business andAnimal Science servesstudents interested in theproduction, processing anddistribution of food and

fiber, the management ofnatural resources (aquatic,range and wildlife),business and education.

Agricultural EngineeringTechnology students learnto apply engineering skillsin areas such as energy-soil-water conservation,building construction anddiesel technology.

Students in theDepartment of Plant Sciencestudy agronomy, crop produc-tion, horticulture, turfgrassmanagement, nurserymanagement andsports/recreation areamanagement. Our nationallyrecognized landscape designprogram offers a computerdesign lab to ensure thatstudents are able toincorporate the latesttechnology in their work.

Information Technologystudents get ready for theircareers in a setting thatmirrors the realities of themodern workplace. Smartclassrooms and newcomputer labs utilizeonly the most currenttechnology, helping thembuild a foundation formanagement positionsin technology-focusedorganizations.

The Financial Servicesprogram prepares studentsfor one of the nation’sfastest growing professions:helping individuals andcompanies with theirfinancial decisions. Aftertaking their CFP exam,graduates work in areassuch as insurance,investments, banking,real estate and personalfinancial planning.

We arrange productiveand interesting internshipsfor those looking to earncollege credit for workplaceexperience. Internships alsoenable students to actuallyprove themselves on the job,resulting in job offers 97%of the time. Students whoare interested in gainingoverseas experience caneven spend their third orfourth semester abroad.

SUNY Cobleskill’s EarlyChildhood program preparesstudents for careers inchildcare, child and familyservices, and teaching —setting the standard formany other collegeprograms. Our program isso successful that it hasbeen used as a model forthe development of EarlyChildhood curricula through-out New York State. Whilethe classroom studies areinteresting and innovative,opportunities for actualexperience happen hereevery day.

Students play an integralpart at two on-campus facili-

ties. The Effie Bennett-PoweChild Development Center isan on-site pre-school wherestudents play an active role.The campus is also hometo the SUNY CobleskillCampus Child Care Center,attended by infants, toddlers,pre-schoolers and school-agechildren. At these facilities,

students develop the leader-ship skills and the strategiesnecessary to becomeeffective staff members

Ournewly renovated CulinaryArts kitchens are like thosefound in fine restaurantsand hotels. There arefully-equipped cateringkitchens, as well as theAmerican Heritagerestaurant. The AmericanHeritage is a student run,fine dining restaurant whichis located on campus.

As the winner of the 2004 SUNY Chancellor’sAward for Excellence in Teaching, Kevin Berneris a popular and well-respected member of thefaculty. While grizzly bears, pelicans and a widearray of birds have been the focus of his fieldstudies, his main area of expertise is the EasternBluebird. He works closely with his studentssurveying wildlife and their habitats, often incaves. Among their more exciting discoverieswas a snake skeleton from the last glacialperiod, thought to be thousands of years old.

Dr. Murphy is an award-winning teacher whois also doing groundbreaking research. As a

Fulbright Senior Scholar, he spent a yearin Prague studying embryonic and fetal kidney

function. Since many kidney problems beginbefore birth, this area of study is of particular

interest to him. He has continued this workin conjunction with the Czech Academy

of Sciences and often involves his students.Dr. Murphy is also the founder of SUNY

Cobleskill’s Early Assurance Pre-Medical Program.
