Mrs. Pareja

What Do I Need to Bring to Class Each Day?Your open, alert, and curious mind, ready to actively participate in class discussion! Intrinsic Motivation! Your best collaborative, cooperative, and focused mindset: on topic, on task, and on time! Respect for class topics, the Signature Community, the Honor Code, your classmates, instructor, and yourself! Understanding of, or explicit questions about the assigned reading/viewing, and over the previous day’s class learning. Also bring:

Your Signature School Agenda Book: Plan your work and work your plan! AP World History Binder, just for this class, with 4 Dividers:

1- IMPORTANT CLASS INFORMATION (this syllabus), MAPS, Essay Rubrics, Time Lines, Unit Buzz Words. 2- YOUR NOTES – required- If it is important enough to be discussed in class, you need notes on it.

3- Written work you are working on, or ready to turn in. 4- Work that has been graded & returned. College ruled loose leaf paper, highlighter, black pen.

Where will I get the Information I Need to Learn?o Text: Robert W. Strayer, Ways of the World: A Global History with Sources – not just reading assigned chapters,

but also unit introductions, documents, art analysis and maps that accompany each chapter. o The Princeton Guide to Cracking the World History Exam, 2015 Edition. Order from Amazon.com for about $14

or pick up at Barnes and Noble in Evansville. I have free (used) 2013-14 editions to give away if you prefer. o CLASS Discussion & YOUR PARTICIPATION; your NOTES & my power points; Charts you create (PERSIART, MAPS,

Unit Snapshots & TIME LINES); your Notes on film snippets – primarily from PBS, History Channel, and CNN’s Millenium series; your “aha!” moments derived from analysis, REFLECTION, and family dinnertime discussion.

What Online Sites Will I Use Frequently? o College Board site with information on the course & exam: www.apcentral.com; go to World History.

Page 2: Student syllabus 2014 2015 aug 5 2014

o Text book practice quizzes, chapter outlines: bedfordstmartins.com/strayerdocutext1eo My website: "http://teacherweb.com/IN/SignatureSchool/MrsPareja" – Sign up for NEWS FLASH:

read instructions then click the button. Password: APWHo Online access to my power points, matrices, handouts, etc.: http://www.slideshare.net/janetpareja

or just go to Slideshare.net and search for “Janet Pareja.” Be sure to check here when you have been absent, or right before a quiz to review.

What are the Expectations for Written Work in this class? o I take the Signature Honor Code very seriously and so should you: ZERO TOLERANCE for plagiarism/cheating/even

DISCUSSING test questions with students from other classes/or taking credit for work that is the product of someone else’s mind. Reminder: take care of personal needs (incl. toilet) BEFORE assessments as no one leaves the room until the end of class. Use BLACK INK for all assignments or they will not be graded. I am happy to loan pens as needed.

o Turn in your best work to the black box at the BEGINNING OF CLASS on THE DAY IT IS DUE. o If requested, it is your responsibility to submit it to Turnitin.com before 10 PM the night before, and to arrive ON

TIME to class with your assignment already printed. Permission will not be given to leave class to print assignments. o Printed: 12 font, Ariel / Times New Roman, standard margins, double spaced. Handwritten: BLACK INK, legible (to

ME) & double spaced. Include your name, class period, date, and name of assignment in block form, in the upper RIGHT HAND CORNER of your clean-edged and college ruled paper. Illegible “work” earns no points.

o The best work showcases good grammar, usage, spelling and punctuation plus concise and clear support for analytical arguments using correct, relevant information. Follow Rubric on any assignment for which one is provided. On hand-written multiple choice quizzes use clear CAPITAL BLOCK LETTERS and …black ink.

Do I need a Computer & Printer? Sometimes- But certainly NOT EVERY NIGHT, and never in class.o All class notes are handwritten - Cornell / T-style highly recommended. We will go over this in class. o Periodic need to type & print out assignments; if instructed to do so, submit work by 10 pm to www.turnitin.como May need to access handouts for homework assignments / look up terms / access textbook outline or Power Point online.

How will I Earn my Grades? o Be prepared for class: Read the chapter before we discuss it in class to be ready for “informed participation;”

quizzes & tests; CAMPATone and Focus Questions over assigned documents and visuals; Socratic Circles; correctly filled-in matrices, time lines, maps, etc. Presentations may also be assigned as class work or homework.

o Quiz & Test format: analytical multiple choice, some matching & short answer. Expect cumulative quizzes and tests. o Mastery of 3 APWH essay formats. Students should memorize Rubrics, which provide clear essay directions. o Late work is not accepted. Grades are not curved, and individual bonus work is never available. “Pareja Passes” may

be earned to assist with planning of study time. Use them wisely. Semester Exams: 20% of the Semester Grade.

What if I am Absent? You are responsible to get notes from trusted classmates, keep up/catch up with homework (see my website and handouts on slideshare). It is YOUR responsibility to turn in make-up work within 2 class period days: I will not chase you for it. Consult with me to schedule make up of in-class activities. Note: Illness is not a successful strategy for avoidance of assignment deadlines in this class.

What if I have Questions ? Come and talk with me after school in the afternoon, or I can meet with you before school in the morning if we make advance arrangements. The start of class is not an appropriate time for impromptu personal discussions. The best way for parents to communicate is via e-mail.

Classroom and Hallway Reminders: Backpacks – Outside the classroom, on the floor, against the wall, NOT on window ledges/chairs. Restroom – One person at a time. Use the restroom before quizzes, tests, Socratic Circles. Students may not

leave the room once an assessment begins.

Food & drink – Only water in Room 302. Do not leave class to buy food/drinks. Do not leave the 3rd floor without my explicit consent.

The Signature Way – Respect, Trust, Inclusiveness, Cooperation &

Personal Integrity. o I will work with you honestly and respectfully; I expect you to reciprocate, and pass it on. o I will do everything I can to help you learn; I expect you to apply equal or greater effort to your learning. o Take Responsibility for yourself, your school, and your downtown environment. o Actively seek out opportunities for inclusive & cooperative interaction with fellow students and staff. Avoid

behaviors that make it difficult for others to offer the same respect to you.o Get involved in extra-curricular activities and events – good for your resume and your personal growth. o Remain On Task, On Time & Focused – Be in your seat with your materials ready at the start of class. If

not, you will be marked tardy. Give your total attention to learning while in AP World History class.

I have read and understand the AP World History Syllabus, and I accept the invitation to engage in World History this year. I will keep up with reading and other assignments, demonstrate respect for my instructor and class mates, and consult with my instructor after school if I have questions about assignments or material. I understand and will follow the Signature Way and Signature School Honor Code: I will earn my own grades, and will encourage honesty in others. I will not represent the work of others (on-line sources, students seated nearby, friends, family, tutors, etc.) as my own. I will not give or accept quiz/ test questions / test answers with/from other students.I will work cooperatively with my classmates and teacher, and strive to create an atmosphere that is conducive to my own learning and to others’ learning: on topic, on task, on time, and focused.
